Pros: 5.1 sound is enhanced if you use an optical cord vs RCA.
Cons: No L-R balance feature. Remote is hard to program and looses all its info.
The Bottom Line: I'd say that it isn't worth it at the price that I paid but if you want to save a few bucks and walk back and forth...

| cluemaster's Full Review: Kenwood VR-409 Receiver |
The VR-409 is a powerful receiver at a decent price. Unfortunately both the remote unit on the receiver and the remote control itself lead me to make this review. I've had it for almost 2 years now and I'm just tired of programming it. I still need to use it because you can't program the 'change mode' button into other universal remotes. So now I only use that huge thing for just moving between modes. And on top of it now, both my new universal remote and the one that came with it only work to turn on the system one out of every 4 or 5 times. Both have new batteries and work fine once you manually turn on the thing.
Also the bass is pretty weak, even when set at the highest level. It does sound OK when using 5.1 though. Only problem is that music CD's aren't in 5.1 so you loose that punch unless you want that simulated echo effect that 5.1 has on a stereo recording.
I do have to say that the component features are pretty useful except that my Kenwood CD player automatically plays if a CD is in when powered on which switches the receiver to CD mode whether I want it to or not. That's what it's supposed to do but I can't figure out how to make that CD player just sit idle upon power-on.
