The Philips AZ202517 CD/radio cassette recorder has a good size foot print, but fits on most any shelf or desk. It features two-way speakers with bass and treble boost for full sound.
The unit has a top-loading CD player, a digital AM/FM tuner, and a cassette deck. The CD player features 20-track programming, shuffle, repeat, next/previous track search, music search, and synchro start recording. The AZ202517 is also CD-R and CD-RW compatible. Make sure CDs are clean, since a fingerprint can cause read failure on this unit.
I tested this mini monster with music from Karma To Burn, Metallica S&M, Rammstein as well as Trance mixes by Oakenfold, Liquid, Tiesto and Digweed - SOLD! Clear highs, quick bass, and even a little "soundstage" image (move the box slightly away from any back wall for better sound).
The AZ202517 plays recorded tapes and records from the built-in CD player or digital tuner. I cannot comment on the quality of the tape deck, since I haven't used tapes in about 15 years (not sure why they are still found in portable systems and automobiles - has anyone seen my 8-Track???).
The sound controls consist of a volume jog dial, a three-band graphic equalizer, surround, and digital dynamic bass boost. I am not really a purist so I activate all the boost features and let her rip! This thing is a certified "pile driver". It has amazing sound for a relatively cost effective unit (we are not talking Wilson Audio speakers
and Jadis tube amps here).
All in all this is a well designed unit with surprising sound and unexpected features (like the little remote control). If you like aggressive sound and design, you will not be disappointed. Good job, Philips! The best sound in this price category.
