| smoger's Full Review: JVC KS-FX450 Car Cassette Player |
About a year ago, when I was content with stock(horrible) sound in my car, I turned the key one day and found that the cassette player in my '90 Lebaron had died and the tapes wouldnt play correctly.
This was a big problem for me since I generally hate pop music(no radio for me!), so I decided to bite the bullet and buy myself a new player. My first order of business was to check all the shops, Best Buy, Tweeter, Circuit City. I knew what my budget was, and I was orignally drawn to a Sony Explode deck I saw at Tweeter for around 150.
Before I jumped in, I decided to look around online and I discovered Crutchfield. I was looking at all the cassette players in my budget, and decided to look at this JVC deck. When I saw the picture of it on their site, I knew it was want I wanted(yeah.. based on price and looks alone... like I said.. I was content with even stock sound at the time!)
Once I got the deck and installed it, it completely changed my outlook on mobile audio. The sound quality is top notch and there are tons of features. Everything you would expect in a model in this relatively low price range - and then some. It has music search for easier tape navigation, auto reverse, Dolby B support, 2 sets of preamps, automatic presetting(makes it fast and easy to find stations in different cities when you travel), and a fold down(tape slot is behind the face, making the display larger), detachable face. You get 18FM presets and 6 on AM. Also included is a remote and cd changer controls.
As for looks, the picture here doesn't do it justice. The display is crisp and bright enough to beat out glare from the sun. At night the face dims with your interior lights so you dont have a bright distraction looking at you(if your car supports it!). In my Lebaron, the face blends in really nice. The red lighting of the sony wouldnt have been too good at all, but the mostly green lighting here works just fine.
Once I got this deck in, like I said, I got hooked on mobile audio, and in that year thats passed I've taught myself tons and have installed a full system in my new car(the one this system started in was totaled in an accident) including nice speakers, an amp and subs, and a CD changer that works with the head unit.
I'm glad I got this one because this was one of the nicest models JVC was making around then. It is their flagship tape player, and after this one, all the displays they produced on the low end models were simply amber, very boring whgen compared to the vibrant green, white and blue of this one.
Go for it if you can still find one of these!
