My Once-A-Month Purchase: Lipton Gallon Size Ice Tea Brew Bags
Written: Dec 01 '07
Pros:One bag makes a gallon of tea, great robust taste, great for sun tea
Cons:Not intended for single-cup brewing.
The Bottom Line: Smooth taste and a breeze to make!
I had a friend visiting for a few days and came home to find the house cleaned, the laundry started and the carpets vacuumed. I look at her curiously and wondered why she was sweating and slightly flustered. "That tea you have is incredible. I am going to have to get some when I go home!" Um, ok. I have a lot of different tea in the kitchen and in my office. Some are expensive and tucked away for private use, some are loose leaves packed in air-tight containers and others are the bagged variety. When I saw this box out of place in the cabinet I asked her if that is what she used to make her tea. She shook her head up and down like a bobble head doll and smiled. Oh lord, she was going to crash in about 45 minutes and it wasn't going to be pretty.
Less than an hour later she was on the couch snoring but she still had a smile on her face. You would have thought that because of the size of the bag she would have put two and two together and come up with four but obviously she didn't. I can't imagine how strong that tea was or if even tasted like tea. I admit it, I like my iced tea and hot tea strong but that is taking it to a whole new level. The taste of this tease is smooth, even if you like it on the strong side. I like the little tab on it so if I want I can leave it hanging out of the side of the coffee pot so its easy to fish out or remove it for brewing outside with the sun tea method. The box gives you some nice pointers and tips on how to get the best taste from these bags and what you can add to them to give them a little kick [lemon, lime, assorted fruits].
How much caffeine is in a bag? I have no idea but the general idea behind this product is that it is for a gallon of tea, not a cup. My usual brew method is pretty simple; one bag for a twelve cup pot of coffee. If I am making sun tea in a gallon glass jug then I add a little less water and lat that baby sit in the sun all day long. If you are brewing with the sun method it is extremely important to let it cool off completely before you refrigerate it or it will get cloudy because of the quick temperature change. For the coffee pot method, toss a bag into the pot and add the water all allow it to run the cycle; then you can add a little more water to it to dilute it or serve it over ice while it is still warm. But won't it get cloudy? Yes, if it ends up sitting for more than about twenty minutes it will but how many people let a glass of fresh brewed iced tea sit for twenty minutes?
I buy the 48 count boxes at my local restaurant supply store in an industrial pack of six boxes for a total of 288 bags. The price comes out to $2.09 cents a box which is cheaper than you can get them anywhere. I go through an average of one box a month at any give time of the year. I make a pot of this in the morning and transfer it to a gallon jug and allow it to cool off for a while then pop it in the refrigerator. Everyone in the house drinks it and it is a lot less expensive than buying a gallon at the grocery store. I add Splenda to this but Tommy usually uses sugar or drinks it as is. Sometimes he will cut up a peach and toss the pieces in, to me that totally ruins the tease. Tea is tea, fruit is fruit and the two shouldn't be combined.
Te Bottom Line
These arent just for cold iced tea; there are times when I run out of regular tea bags or I'm too lazy to walk to the office to get more tea and I will grab one of these and make a pot. That is usually enough to snap my eyes open and get me motivated to do pretty much anything around the house. Most people will want to dilute it a little because it is made to make a gallon of iced tea. Is this easier than buying the 100 count bags? It is in regards to not having to peel open a ton of the envelopes. Cost wise it isn't any cheaper to buy this rather than the regular sized tea bags so it all comes down to personal choice and taste preference.
As always, thanks for the visit
