| audiophileguy's Full Review: Aiwa CSD-EL300 Cassette/CD Boombox |
It's hard to find really good quality boomboxes in small sizes, so when I saw this one, I bought it. This is not to say this is an audio head-turner -- it's not. But as far as looks go, this one is very classy, and the sound it puts out isn't bad, either.
The front-loading CD player was a big draw for me, as this feature isn't found in many boomboxes, and -- to me at least -- shows a little more quality in design than the myriad other boxes out there.
Only putting out 5 watts, this stereo doesn't get extremely loud, but it has satisfied all my needs when using it in my garage or in my workout room, filling both just fine.
One thing I particularly like is the functions the remote offers. Just about every feature on this stereo can be performed using the remote, including all tape functions and toggling the stereo's sound modes (rock, pop, jazz or none). The remote I have with mine is a bit large with a protective cover that must be lifted to access most features. Though I don't mind the slight awkwardness of this much, it may be a hindrance for other users. Just check to see which remote style comes with yours.
Beware: One thing to look for is a headphone jack. Mine came with one, and it's hard to believe that Aiwa (or any other maker, for that matter) would exclude this feature on a box such as this. But another e-pinions member bought one of these and said it didn't have one. So be sure to check on this before you buy. The jack that came with mine, by the way, is the mini kind.
Another neat feature is Aiwa's Qsurround mode. The company claims this mode will make this thing sound like it has sound coming from four speakers instead of two. 'Sure,' I thought. But I have to say, the sound mode really does liven up music, though it doesn't work for all types. I have an Aiwa TV with this feature, and I wish it sounded as good on the TV as it does on the stereo.
Other than that, this box doesn't offer much else that others don't have too, but it's still a neat little stereo that is small enough to be taken anywhere, loud enough for most uses, and better looking than most the other boxes out there.
