| obisan69's Full Review: Samsung DVD-V1000 DVD Player / VCR Combo |
I’m a second year college student, and when I moved from the dorm to an apartment, my tiny little TV/VCR combo was just not enough for my large living room, especially because we had our couch fairly far away. The sound and picture quality weren’t exactly great to begin with, so it was definitely time for something new. Then I just had to figure out how to pay for it (yes, I’m the typical, broke college girl). Luckily, I had a birthday coming up and my parents didn’t know what to get me, so I suggested a new television and VCR.
I wanted a DVD player, but I had so many VHS copies of things that I thought it would be a waste to not just get a normal VCR. I didn’t have the room for both, nor did I expect my parents to shell out the money to buy one of each. I also wanted to have the VHS around to be able to record Oprah when I had to be in class at the same time. I figured I would have to live with watching DVDs on my computer if I needed to watch one.
I had never seen a dual DVD/VHS before, and didn’t even know that they existed, until I unwrapped it in November. I was very excited, as my dad wouldn’t have bought anything on a whim (he researches all major purchases to no end, talking to everyone he knows about what he wants to get, and looking in every consumer resource around). I’m not sure how much my dad paid for the unit, but seeing as how he bought one for my mom for her birthday too, he must have decided it was worth the cost.
The setup was very easy, both the physical hookups and the onscreen setup. I’m not a technological whiz, not by a long shot, and I managed to get it hooked up just fine. It is somewhat larger than most normal VCRs or DVD players, however since it is still only one machine, it’s definitely a great space saver.
I haven’t had any problems with using either the VHS or the DVD with this system. The picture quality on both is fabulous, and it is compatible with a ton of different formats if I ever have the urge. It is definitely better than trying to watch these movies on my computer screen. My roommates love it too!
The remote is pretty complicated because of all the formats that the machine accepts, but it doesn’t take too long to get the hang of it (at least enough so that you can do everything major). Just don’t let all the buttons scare you. You will learn to master them!
This unit is a great solution for the transition video technology is making from VHS to DVD. It has the best of all worlds!
