Pros: One-box DVD, CD, CDR, VHS player (and VCR) at a very reasonable price.
Cons: Lack of features - no Jog/Shuttle
The Bottom Line: Serves well as a basic DVD/CD/VCR. Not a lot of features but a solid, pragmatic machine overall. Great at simple playback and saving shelf space.

| sfhiggins's Full Review: Samsung DVD-V1000 DVD Player / VCR Combo |
I purchased this machine about a year ago and use it as my DVD player, VCR, and CD player. I sold my existing DVD player (a Samsung DVD812 that I was very happy with) to a friend rather than buying a new VCR and CD player for myself and being stuck with three boxes to find shelf space for. I give the V1000 a 6 as a DVD player, a 7 as a CD player, and an 8 as a VCR. It performs all three functions adequately, though certainly not extravagantly, and is wonderful in that it saves a tremendous amount of shelf space and complicated wiring as a 3-in-1.
Pros:
Picture and sound quality are both very good, though these are much more a function of the quality of your television and speaker system, in my experience. This player has component video-outs and an optical audio out, so if you have good equipment to hook it up to, it will certainly perform. I have one of the good Wega (with the triple filter) sets and an Onkyo receiver with Cambridge Soundworks speakers (all great stuff that I would also highly recommend) and the Samsung works very well with each of these in all of its capacities (DVD, CD, VCR). I had no trouble connecting the whole setup, and I am very happy with the results.
Cons:
The major shortcoming of this machine is a lack of features, specifically a jog/shuttle control, which would allow you to ff/rew much more easily. If you only want to sit down, pop in a movie, and let it play through, this player will do it very well. If you really want to use all of the bells and whistles that come with the DVD medium, though, you will need something else. Features like zoom, fast/slow-motion playback, frame-by-frame advance are either missing entirely or too difficult to use.
Verdict:
All that being said, I still believe you get a lot for your money with this machine, as the playback quality is high and it takes the place of three traditional machines. Most DVD players that have the added features this one is missing cost just as much as it does, and you're then looking at at least another hundred bucks for a good VCR, so if you're willing to forego a couple of extras, this machine will serve you very well.
As an afterthought, I have had no technical problems with this machine in the year I have owned it, nor did I have any with the previous Samsung player I owned for a year before purchasing this one.
