| dkozin's Full Review: Samsung DVD-M301 DVD Player |
The Samsung DVD-M301 DVD player is a really good deal. And, unlike some earlier Samsung models, the performance is very good. The player plays CD-R, CD-RW and MP3.
Front Panel
The player and the remote feature high-tech looking silver-gray finish. The front panel has a jog/shuttle control that allows you to control chapter/track selection, frame advance, fast forward and reverse scan. It also has a gold-plated headphone jack and volume control, a row of buttons for basic functions (play, stop, eject, fast forward, reverse, pause).
Rear Panel
The rear panel has analog audio out, coaxial and optical digital audio outs, S-Video, composite and component video outs. The switch allows you to select between S-Video, composite and component video out.
Picture And Sound
The player produces very good picture and sound. The picture is a little “softer” than some other players, but it is difficult to notice. Also, the S-Video is the best way to connect this player to your TV, since the component out connection produces somewhat less saturated colors. The player does not produce artifacts and it does not skip or freeze, unlike earlier Samsung models.
The sound is excellent, both during DVD Video and Audio CD playback. The only small issue with CD Audio is the fact that the mechanism is slow to go to the next selected track, especially in the backward direction.
Features
The player has standard DVD features (angle select, language/soundtrack select, subtitle select, etc.). In addition it plays CD-R and CD-RW discs and allows you to play MP3 files on a computer CD-ROM (CD-R) disc.
It also has slow motion, three bookmarks, virtual surround sound (Spatializer N-2-2), 2x scan with normal-pitch audio, 2x and 4x zoom, A-B repeat. And (feature not usually found in inexpensive players) it has “digest” function, that shows beginnings of nine chapters simultaneously.
The Screen Fit feature expands the widescreen DVD to fill the entire area of a standard 4:3 screen – a rare and useful feature.
MP3
The player plays MP3s even if there are data files on the disc. You can select files to play on screen, navigating the directory structure. It plays MP3 of any bitrate (you will want to use at least 128K bitrate to get good sound).
Remote
The remote has good button layout and features a thumb-operated joystick. It has the same silver-gray finish as the player and features white buttons with black letters. Unfortunately the buttons are not backlit.
Bottom Line
The Samsung DVD-M301 is a great deal. For $169 you get CD-R/W and MP3 playback, nice looks, all necessary connections, good remote and interesting features.
