This is one of the most impressive home theater receivers I have come across. The appearance of it is smooth and clean, not overloaded with a lot of buttons. Though there are several buttons! It has a nice green LED display to let you know what your settings are. It is a large receiver at 17-1/8 inches wide, 6-7/8inches in height and18-7/16 inches deep.

There are a total of 26 different sound modes to choose from with this receiver.
The receiver will automatically detect most types of sounds or you can do it manually.
THX Surround EX With an optional 2-channel amplifier you can produce true theater sound with 7 speakers and one subwoofer. THX Surround EX can be played through any Digital Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1 soundtrack. The two extra speakers in the THX brings out the extra sounds you might miss under the 5.1 system.
Dolby Digital 5.1 The most popular format for the DVD movies. This is a system of 5 speakers and one subwoofer.
Dolby Pro Logic This tries to turn non Dolby 5.1 sounds into true Dolby 5.1 sounds. It does a pretty decent job.
DTS Is slightly better on quality sound but not as popular as Dolby 5.1. Not to many DVDs have DTS sound.
Looking in the back of the receiver can be a nightmare to a lot of people. I counted 72 connections in all, plus 4 in the front, remember you will not need them all. This receiver is designed to give you the most and possible hookups that you may need.
A Short Description of the Connections!
RCA Jacks are your standard connection jacks.
Coaxial is an RCA connection but you need a coaxial digital audio cable. All you need is one cable to make all of your speaker connections, coaxial is the second best for the speaker connections (audio connections) from the Receiver to something like a DVD player.
Optical uses a Fiber Optic Cable to make all of your speaker connections with one cable, this is the best for the speaker connections (audio connections) from the Receiver to something like a DVD player.
Composite is your standard RCA jacks, if your TV has S-video or Component, use them.
S-video is a four-pin connector that gives you the second best video connection possible.
Component is the best video connection you can make. It consists of three different cables.
The Front of the Receiver
The front of the receiver has one headphone jack, with four inputs. The inputs are two RCA jacks for left & right audio, a Composite video input (RCA Jack) and one S-video input.
The Back of the Receiver
For Inputs there are a total of 4 Composite inputs, 4 S-video inputs and 2 Component video inputs.
For Outputs there are a total of 2 Composite, 2 S-video outputs and 1 Component video output.
It is 6.1 ready to use and you can set it up with an extra amplifier to playback a 7.1 sound system.
For the Speaker outputs there are 16 binding posts, two for each speaker. (Left & Right)
There are two Coaxial Inputs and two Optical Inputs.
RCA Input Jacks total 8 (4Left & 4 Right) plus two for a Record player, two for a CD player and two for a Tape player.
RCA Output Jacks total 4 (2Left & 2 Right) plus two for a Tape player.
FM Antenna threaded female F-connection input.
AM Antenna input
Plenty of power at 100 watts x 6 speakers at 8 ohms.
You can preset up to 40 AM/FM radio stations.
You can connect 2 stereo speakers to it so they can be placed in another room for dual room sound
It has an onscreen display letting you know what functions are on.
It is a nice looking remote with an LCD window at the top to let you know what it is set on like, CD, DVD and so on. Hit the Light button and the buttons all-light up in green.
The remote is preprogrammed with most Onkyo products like a CD player and so on. It is also a learning remote that can learn from another remote or the product.
It has buttons for controlling your Receiver, CD player, DVD player, Satellite TV, TV, Cable, VCR and more.
This is one of the nicest universal remotes I have seen.
A friend of mine just bought this beauty and wasnt sure how to hook it up right so I was drafted to help. He paid $749 for the Onkyo TX-DS787 A/V receiver. I hooked it to a 60 Mitsumi TV, a Kenwood 200 CD change, a RCA DVD player, a Panasonic cassette player and a Bose sound system with 5 speakers and one subwoofer. It took us about two hours to hook everything up and place the new Bose speakers he had bought with the receiver.
It took a little time to get use to the controls but once I got the hang of it, the remote was easy to use. The remote did program in the TV, DVD Player, CD changer and cassette player. Only two things that did not work right was the picture in picture for the TV and selecting from 200 CDs on the CD changer.
The sound was incredibly crisp and clear from the speakers and the subwoofer was fair on performance.
The receiver is a superb piece of equipment made for the home theater. It has plenty of connections in the back to hookup all of your home theater needs.
The Onkyo TX-DS787 A/V receiver comes with a two-year warranty.
