When my old VCR started having problems, I took it to the repair shop before I realized how much VCR prices have come down over the year. I spent $120 on repairs that didn't fix the problem, before I realized that I could get a new one for less. Live and learn.
I've had this VCR for one year. It has worked perfectly, and I have only one complaint. That is that you can only set up to record 8 programs at a time. This may sound like plenty, but if you record a number of programs regularly, you may run out.
The battery backup feature is great, because we tend to have frequent short outages of electricity. Because of the backup feature, I never have to reenter all the recording schedules.
The commercial skipping feature works very well. For example, after recording a 30 minute program, the VCR spends about 7 minutes moving the tape back and forth, finding the commercials and marking their starts and stops. When you play it back, it magically fast forwards over the commercials. About 10% of the time it fails to mark the commercial properly, and you need to manually fast forward, or manually press play. That's not a big deal.
I find that the VCR+ system is unreliable, but that seems to be the fault of the VCR+ numbers rather than the VCR itself. That is, I've tried it a few times, and found that the recording times or the channel is not correct.
When we first bought it there was a high-pitched squeal during fast forward, but that no longer occurs.
