| YolandaM's Full Review: RCA VR704hf VHS VCR |
Alas, the time came when I had to grow up and return my mom's VCR to her and buy my own...(enter the RCA VR704HF)
Confession
I have had this machine for about three weeks now, and I enjoy it. The first thing that attracted me to it in the store was...and how I hate to admit to this...it was sooo pretty, the face of the VCR had these glowing kind of neon green buttons, the power button (which always stays lit unless the VCR is unplugged, and is somewhat irritating if this machine will be located in you bedroom, and you like complete and utter darkness while you sleep.) and the actual function buttons, the play, rewind and fast forward buttons. The remote has four light up buttons also these are the channel up and down, and the volume up and down buttons.
Features
This VCR's features are as follows:
~~Commercial Advance
~~Movie Advance
~~Universal Backlit Remote Control
~~VCR Plus+ Gold
Commercial Advance
While the commercial Advance feature is wonderful, it is not an exact science, although it is doggone near flawless. After you record something off TV (like Recess) :-) and you don't manually pause the commercials the "Commercial Advance" feature will kick in and begin to "mark" the commercials, I have no idea how the machine knows what's a commercial and what's not but it does pretty good, after "marking" all the commercials it forwards itself back to the end of the show you've taped and when you are watching the show the VCR automatically forwards through the commercials for you. This can be hit or miss at times, I've only had about 2-3 incidents where it actually started in the middle of a scene and far as I know there is not a way to "unmark" something that it has marked as a commercial.
Movie Advance
This feature will allow you to automatically advance through movie previews, I only used it once and it had advance through the first five minutes of the movie. Ehh, go figure *Shrug*
Universal Backlit Remote Control
Well number 1. It's darn pretty and number 2. I was able to get it configured to work on my old, old color TV. You can also set it up for your DVD Player, another VCR, and your cable box.
VCR Plus+ Gold
For everyone who can't program a VCR the old fashioned way, this feature is for you, all you do is look in your local TV Guide and it should have the VCR Plus+ numbers at the end of the program name that you want to record, you go to menu, and VCR Plus+ programming and enter the code and if you want to record it once, twice, daily, etc. and VIOLA you are done.
Setup
The VCR basically setup itself, when you first hook it up and turn it on a blue screen appears and it asks you if you want to 1)setup now or 2)later, I pressed 1 and it asked me for my zip code, I entered it via the remote control and the VCR took it from there, it automatically found a station that had a time signal on it, and it automatically found all the VCR Plus+ enabled stations...or something like that, then it asked me to turn it off and it flashed "Download" on the display for a few minutes and that was that. Simple and painless, exactly how I like my electrical experiences.
Conclusion
If you are looking to buy a VCR, this is a sure shot, it has 4-heads and Hi-Fi sound, there are channel up/down buttons on the face of the VCR itself(which is helpful if you are always misplacing your remote) as well as a record, stop/eject buttons.
I have not had any problems with it as of yet not do I expect any, but if anything should change you will be the first to know.
