| shiners's Full Review: Pioneer VSX-D710S 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I purchased this unit at Rex TV & Appliance and couldn't be more pleased with its performance. Pioneer has priced this unit very competitively. It is a 5x100 (5.1)audio/video multi-channel receiver with more than enough options, connections and modes. The "Midnight" listening mode is especially useful. This mode allows the listener to enjoy the full effects of surround sound at lower volumes by elevating the sounds that would ordinarily not be heard well at low volume. It works with movies and music equally as well.
The VSX-D710S has a very clean, uncluttered appearance with a softly hinged flip-down faceplate that hides the controls located just below the display. Behind the faceplate lies an abundance of adjustments along with video/audio inputs (all connections are gold plated) and S-video input. The volume control is conveniently located and operated by the simple turning of the dial. The only other dial on the face of this unit allows for function selection and treble/bass adjustment. Pressing the almost unnoticeable button beside the function knob allows adjustment for treble/bass. The display is an elegant amber dot-matrix (dimmable) design instead of the generic blue seen on most other brands. The remote is multi-programmable and learning capable. This remote will operate everything that you own once you program it or teach it the functions.
The VSX-D710S is a powerful unit. It will play cleanly at extremely high volumes until you overload your ears. Its ability to play music is equally as important to me as its movie enhancement capabilities. The A/B speakers option allows for 4 speaker music listening to fill the room with sound. The "B" speakers are bypassed by the surround speakers when watching movies if you choose to use your system in this manner.
The settings are very important to learn on this receiver. If done incorrectly, it will not play at its full potential. My speaker setup consists of (2)Polk RT55i front and (2) rear. JBL HLS-410 rear surround, Polk center channel, and Velodyne CHT-10 subwoofer complete the set. If you have a powered sub, a center channel, L/R front, and rear surround, try these settings.
*Speakers settings = FS-CS-SS
*Subwf = On
*Xover = 200
*LFEATT = 0
*LCF = On
*DRC = Max
*Adjust distance from speakers to seating position.
*"Loudness" = on.
*Use "Test Tone" button on remote, while in seating position, and adjust the volume of each speaker until they all play at equal level.
*Adjust digital settings on receiver so it knows what connections you've made for your equipment.
