| colleenmf's Full Review: Technics SA-EX140 2 Channels Receiver |
When we married in 1992, my husband had an old RCA Dimensia system, which included a TV, 2 VCR’s, a CD player, a cassette player, a record player, an AM/FM radio, and a receiver. The system was completely integrated and ran on one remote.
Well, over the years various components have died. As you probably well know, in most instances it is cheaper to replace electronics than to repair them. So we no longer have a nice integrated system but a mishmash from various manufacturers.
Our latest addition is the Technics SA EX 140 receiver. We wanted an inexpensive receiver to work with our Magnavox TV, RCA VCR, RCA record player, Sony 5 CD changer, Sony headphones, Phillips CDR, and occasionally with a Contour CD/Cassette player. We hope to replace it all with an HDTV unit in 5 or 6 years. In the mean time we bought this Technics receiver.
My husband had it hooked up in about an hour. There were plenty of input slots for all our components (and, yes, we still need a “phono” input for the old record player. At least we don’t own any eight track tapes.) The headphone input is conveniently located in the front of the unit. The receiver itself has an AM/FM tuner built into it. I am happy to report that everything works well together. But it is a good thing we don’t have a DVD player just yet as there is not a specific input for it. You could use either the CD or the VCR input, I suppose.
This Technics unit has 2 channels of 100 Watts each and 4 speaker outputs, giving good quality sound through out the entire room. We can’t tell the difference between the sound from this Technics receiver and the much more expensive Dimensia system that it replaced. The buttons, on the front of the unit, are easy to read and self explanatory. The remote is small but again all buttons are well marked with large bright print. It is serving its purpose nicely and hopefully we’ll get a few years out of it.
Overall, this is a very good piece of equipment for the price. I’d recommend it for general household use. If you have more components you will probably need a more expensive unit and if you have very acute hearing and are sensitive to things like that you may need a more technically advanced receiver but we have found this unit to be quite satisfactory.
