| steelereports's Full Review: RCA RS1248 Shelf System |
Introduction
The RCA RS-1248 mini-system has been, in my experience, a lovely lemon! While it came at a reasonable price and had great features, it only lasted six months beyond its one year warranty. The big draw back is that the repair costs would have come about twenty bucks short of buying a new system, Which of course is what I did.
The System
The system itself is very well put together, everything is easy to reach, the display is colorful, and the sound is what youd expect from a mini-system. It has a three disc CD player that allows you to change the two discs not being played without disrupting the music of the disc youre listening to, an interesting feature. The system also has an AM/FM tuner and a two cassette tape deck for anyone still using tapes. The AM/FM tuner itself is alright, however the antennas are only about four feet long, a little short for my liking. There are also twenty programmable stations for each AM and FM which could be set using the display or the remote control. The tape decks are standard, I never really used them, but they worked well on the few occasions I needed them. There is also a walkman type headphone jack that works very well. One drawback is that there is no AUX feature on the system so it is impossible to use it as a sound system for a computer or other device. Another thing I miss is the clock and sleep timer that this system lacks.
The Speakers
The speakers are standard twelve inch high by eight inch wide that are detached from the system. The cords to connect the speakers to the system are somewhat short for my uses, only about five feet each. It is hard to put theme where Id like since theres so little cord. The speakers to have a super bass option that can be activated through the display or the remote control, as well as pre set equalization patterns for different types of music, also controlled through the display or remote control.
The Remote Control
The remote control operates on two triple A batteries, and does not have illuminated keys. It is possible to change between tape, CD, and Tuner with the remote, as well as change the volume, set radio stations and program CD sequences. The remote does just about everything there is to do.
Conclusion
All in all this is a good system for what its worth, unfortunately the system just doesnt seem to stand up. The CD function gave out after a year and a half, six months after the warranty gave out, and the repairs cost almost as much as a new system. My advice, stay away unless youre looking for short term use.
