The biggest problem that I have with electronics, is the remote controls that come with them. Time and time again, I end up doing something stupid to them that ends their lives too far before there time has come. It seems almost to the point, that I was not meant to own a remote control...EVER. From dropping one on cement, to spilling a Coke into one, to even overusing a button on one of them, they often meet their demise when they are introduced to my right hand.
The biggest problem, is that I am absent-minded when I am in control of the remote. Often times I will forget that I have it in my hand, and I will take it somewhere it does not belong. One day in college, I was getting ready for class, and I put it in my pocket instead of my calculator. Boy did my friends get a good laugh out of that when I pulled it out in class. The teacher even made jokes about me wanting to "turn him off" with it. So, needless to say, remote controls are not what I would consider something that has been a good experience to me.
Recently I lost the remote control to my television through circumstances beyond my control, and I needed to purchase a new one that would fulfill my needs. When I went to the store (Walmart in Moscow, Idaho), I decided that I was going to try my hand at a Universal Remote. Having never had one before in my lifetime, I really did not know what to expect, or really look for. What I ended up picking up was a recent model that RCA has put in the stores. The version that I picked up was your basic remote control with the standard buttons that you would find.
This RCA remote is designed to work on your VCR, your television, and your cable box. It has the volume, channel, mute and Previous channel buttons at the top. The previous button is one that I use quite often in fact. The center part consists of all the channel buttons (0-9), an enter button, and the tv/vcr button. The tv/vcr button lets you switch between both of those electronic devices. At the bottom of the remote are the VCR controls, that include Rewind, play, fast-forward, record, pause, and stop. At the furthest south part of the remote is a menu button that pops up on your television screen.
The remote works on any television or VCR that is on the market right now. What it comes with, is a code-book that allows you to enter the code that is given for your device, and this thusly allows it to work for you in that manner. It is really easy to set up, because all that you have to do is press the code search button, then type in the 3 number code, and you are good to go! The thing that makes it even easier, is that some of the newer electronics have the code already in them, and all you have to do is point at the television or VCR, press the code search button, and it will do all the work for you!
The biggest bonus about this remote, is that the buttons are set up to glow in the dark. So, what this allows you to do is to turn off the lights while you are watching a movie, and still be able to control the VCR! What I end up using this the most for is if I can not find the remote. I just turn off the lights, and start my search then. It becomes easy to find, because it stands out very well in a dark room.
I highly recommend this remote to anyone that is looking for a remote that will withstand harsh conditions. I often have dropped this remote, and it is still working perfectly. This is what I consider to be a great conditioned remote, because it really does stand up to the bad treatment that I tend to give all my remotes. I also recommend it, because at $9.99 it was really worth the money to have a remote that could control both my television AND my VCR.
