The Bottom Line: The RCU400 would not replace your current remotes since you will still need them to control the features introduced in televisions after 1990 since it does not control the menu.
I purchased this remote to control my TV and VCR since my VCR remote stopped working and I wanted one remote to control both appliances. The RCA RCU400 seemed good based on the label so I bought it.
The remote contols the basic features such as changing channels and controlling volume for my LG Television. The mute and enter keys however do not work with the same code. For my goldstar VCR, only tape operations such as play, stop etc. work in addition to changing channels. The fundamental features of either appliances, for which the were bought, can not be controlled by this remote. Therefore, it has not and will not replace any of my original remotes. The menu feature is not supported for either appliance and thus, I have no control over closed caption, picture quality, time or any other feature these appliances have. For persons will children, whose televisions has a V-chip. You would not be able to control what your children look at using this remote.
Upon contacting RCA, I was informed that their universal remote only controls what they call basic features of most brands of these appliances. The menu feature that is present on almost every television or VCR produced, is what they consider an advanced feature and is not supported for most brands. If you are considering getting a Universal remote where you would be able to control features introduced after 1990, don't look at the RCA RCU400 to provide that control.
The RCA brand of Universal Remote Controls combines ease of use with advanced features to make your entertainment experience as simple as possible. Ou...More at eBay
