flash-dave's Full Review: Sony RM-VL700 Remote Control
I have had this remote for a little over 2 years now and it is undoubtedly the best remote you can get for $30 bucks. All the remotes it replaced (5) are tucked away gathering dust
What makes it so good is it's simplicity - most other learning remotes are crazy - 100 buttons 8 components $300. The VL700 keeps it simple, its easy to program and teach it.
It has 5 component buttons (TV, VCR, DVD, CBL/SAT, AMP) you can teach commands to the component buttons too - so when you push DVD the TV will switch to DVD input. If you have Sony components you can assign the 'Power On' function to the component button so when you push 'TV' the TV will turn on (if you push it again the TV will remain on - cool addon)
I have a TiVo which doesn't have a program code - so I had to teach all the functions to the remote. I had no problem teaching it and managed to map all the TiVo functions to the remote - except for the 'Thumbs Up' and 'Thumbs Down'.
It doesn't have 80 buttons on it so if you are a control freak and want every button programed to it you are out of luck - other wise just program the most used functions into it and keep the original remotes nearby for those obscure functions. But trust me you may only reach for those remotes once a year
I have mine setup as follows:
TV: Controls TiVo - 'TV' button turns my TV on
VCR: Controls VCR - 'VCR' button switches TV to Video 1
DVD: Controls DVD - 'DVD' button switches TV to Video 2
CBL: Controls XBOX/DVD - 'CBL' button switches TV to Video 3
AMP: Controls my Mac so I can mute iTunes with out getting up from Sofa
If you are looking for a replacement remote or your coffee table is covered with remotes - then the Sony RM-VL700 is your man.
Controls up to five audio/visual components Learning function for programming from other remotes LED illumnation for clear button location Rubber keyp...More at Amazon Marketplace
