Pros: Solid, quaility, great sound; great price for what you get.
Cons: No switched power outlet for other components (like for your SW)
The Bottom Line: Unless you want to peel the paint of the walls (and destroy your hearing), you'll be very happy with this unit!

| mscott's Full Review: Sony STR-DE475 5.1 Channels Receiver |
Little by little I had been replacing my old home theatre system. First went the center channel speaker that came with my old system; then the front speakers. Recently I bought some B-I-C America in-wall speakers (recommended) to replace the rear surround sound speakers. Made a big improvement, but I was still listening through my original Dolby Pro Logic receiver. Ok, but not wonderful.
I looked at a Denon and this Sony (and other Sony units). Since I already have a Sony DVD player that works great, I thought it'd be better to stay with what I know works well. I'm glad I did. Nothing against the Denon, but my ears can't tell the difference - but my wallet sure can! Unless you've got more money than you know what to do with, why spend the extra money on a "high end" brand? The Sony is great at more than half the cost of the Denon model I looked at with similar features.
The first DVD movie I poped into my player to "test" my new receiver was Pearl Harbor. Wow, what a difference. I thought Pro Logic sounded good -- DTS really kicks _____. You could almost feel the planes flying past your head (even in my out-of-balance room). Sounded great even at lower volumes.
Again, unless you have super-human hearing that can pick up the lowest THD levels, then you'll be very happy with this unit. The only thing that made me think twice about it was the fact that it does not have a switched AC outlet on the back of the unit to allow me to plug in my Sony Subwoofer (so the SW comes on with the receiver). Other than that, I'm very happy with my decision to by this unit.
Specs for this unit can be found online at Sony's website: http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/home/homeaudio/receivers/str-de475.shtml
