Pros: Great for movies, great remote, well built, nice features.
Cons: Not as good for music.
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a movie machine, you've found it. If music is important to you, listen hard to the competitors and think it over.

| hansklopek's Full Review: Onkyo TX-DS595 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I've been thirsting after a good surround sound receiver for a LONG time now. I finally bought an Onkyo 595. I have a real dilemma in buying audio equipment, namely you never really know what the unit will sound like until you hear it in your own home, attached to your own equipment.
Anyhow, I really love music and I enjoy many genres. I would say for me the musical quality of a receiver is slightly more important than the movie quality.
Here's the rundown of my speaker system:
Front Mains: Kef Q15.2
Center: Kef Q95c.2
Rear: Bose 201
Sub: Infinity BU-1
This setup sounds GREAT for movies. Just awesome. However, for music it leaves a little to be desired. While the distortion level is very low, the sound is so warm and smooth that it seems to sacrifice detail and clarity. Voices don't have the same power as with my old two-channel (Sony) receiver. Since I want a unit I can be completely satisfied with, I'm going to return this one and try something else.
I don't want to be overly critical and remember, this is just one man's opinion. What sounds good to me may be different for others. In all, this is a solid unit.
UPDATE ON 6/25/02
I want to retract my statements about this unit's musical quality. Dissatisfied with my findings, I swapped out lots of connections and cables and found that replacing my 16 guage Radio Shack speaker wire with some 14 guage Monster Cable XP made significant difference in musical quality, crispness, and impact. I now would whole-heartedly recommend this unit to my friends. Just make sure you use some good cable. I must admit, I was skeptical that upgrading the speaker cable would result in an audible difference and as such, I was reluctant to spend the $30. Even my wife hears the difference and she is not nearly as discerning a listener as I am.
