Rifled slugs are used for deer hunting in areas of many states where rifles are not lawful because of proximity to populated areas. Slugs also may be used when a hunter does not have a rifle. In that case he often chooses to use his shotgun with slugs to fill his venison tag.
When I use a shotgun for hunting deer, I choose a rifled slug such as this Remington because the single projectile is much more effective on large game than a buckshot load that puts out 9 smaller pellets but usually not in a very effective pattern, at least at any range outside of a few yards.
These are 12 gauge 2 ¾ inch length plastic shotshells loaded with a single 1 ounce Foster-type rifled slug projectile each. The Foster slug is the most common type of shotgun slug with a weight forward balance that allows it to fly through the air using the same principle as a badminton shuttlecock. This makes the smooth bore shotgun a viable weapon for shooting a single projectile which used to be limited to the old punkin ball inherited from the antique smooth bore muskets used in the muzzle loading days. Those round balls were notoriously inaccurate but the rifled slugs are quite good. My 12 gauge shotgun will group at 4 inches for five of these rifled slugs at 100 yards using the standard rifled sights on the improved cylinder bore barrel of my Remington 870 pump shotgun.
The rifled slug gives the one gun hunter with only a 12 gauge shotgun a chance for shooting medium game like deer whereas the practical limits of a shotgun without slugs is limited to birds and small game on the order of rabbits and squirrels.
The 12 gauge slug is one ounce and formed of soft lead. Although other gauge slugs are available, I would only recommend the 12 gauge for use as a deer gun as the limits of the other typical shotguns are even stricter than the 12 gauge which is marginal and only recommended because the law limits use of a regular rifle which is much more useful for deer hunting. The slug travels at a velocity of 1560 feet per second, measured at the muzzle and my limits are 50 yards or closer for making sure the animal is cleanly killed. It is too easy to take a chance and losing a wounded animal is bad for the animal, for the shooter, and for the sport in general.
The Remington Rifled Slugs come in 5 round boxes for about $8 - $10 a box. Always check your shotgun to make sure it is hitting where you aim with the brand of slugs you plan to hunt with. You should plan on sighting your gun in with a least one five pack of slugs before you head out into the field.
