a Very Helpful Review
by the Epinions community
My review is actually for the DEH-P6400, which is the newer version of the 6300. It's not listed separately on Epinions.

I bought this deck to replace the factory radio in my 85 Oldsmobile. The stock speaker configuration for my car is 3-1/2's in the dash and 6X9's in the rear deck. As you can imagine, there's not much bass up front. But here's where the Pioneer really shines...
These receivers have a very nifty Sound Focus Equalizer (SFEQ) function that allows you to select how the sound spectrum will be distributed between front and rear speakers. There are 4 preset settings and a customizable one. By selecting one of these settings I can direct most of the lows to my Infinity Reference 6X9's and use the Kappa 3-1/2's for the crisp highs that they do so well. The results are outstanding. I can't express how much difference it makes in my car.
This feature would be less useful for installations where the speaker compliment was more balanced. But for typical factory speaker setups, it's a God send.
There is also a 4 preset equalization system and 2 customs for every day "song compensation". Super bass, vocals, and a couple in between allow painless tweaking for best sound on any given album or radio station.
Both of these functions have their own front panel buttons. There's also an "Audio" button that brings you into the menu for audio functions. Very intuitive and easy to get to even while driving. I also like the rotary volume knob, which has a nice feel to it.
The display is pretty blue with greenish yellow highlights around the buttons. Looks nice at night too. The fancy display functions were covered in another review... I don't use them (too much distraction). All at the touch of another button called "Entertainment" mode.
Sound quality is excellent, although the amp section gets distorted before the volume control runs out of numbers. FM reception is the best I've had in a car deck - in fact it's annoying that it finds so many stations when scanning. You can set the sensitivity but I haven't got that far with the manual yet. My P6400 plays CD's I recorded on my computer (converted from MP3's back to audio) and has NEVER skipped.
I have only 2 complaints. The faceplate is a real drag to install. It comes off easily but I find it difficult to line up the detents when putting the bugger back on. There is an option to screw it on permanantly if you like. There is also only one remote wire, that is used for both amp remote and the power antenna. Consequently the antenna comes up even in CD mode, which I think is dumb. Oh well.
