redflag's Full Review: Sony Walkman SRF-88 AM/FM Radio
Now that the summer is upon us (and spring track season has ended), I decided to purchase a relatively cheap Sony AM/FM stereo to use for my continued running. The SRF-88, at the time of purchase, seemed like a decent choice. With a wrap-around wristband, I didn't have to worry about dropping the unit on unforgiving concrete. It had an AM/FM radio, which is what I needed. Plus, it was adorned with the "Sony" name (which to me screams 'quality product').
Ready to run, I attached the unit to my wrist with the wrap-around wristband. Immediately, I noticed my dilemma. How would I adjust the tuning while running if my fingers could not reach the tuning knob on the unit? This was a poor design flaw, I thought. So to compensate, I used my other hand to adjust the tuning (but not before I slowed my pace--which was a royal pain). Also, this product's lack of a digital tuner makes it all the more inconvenient to switch channels. Back to the wristband, if it wasn't tight enough, it would flop around on my wrist creating a needless distraction.
Ah yes--the screen (or LCD as some like to refer to it). It doesn't stay uniformly bright. In fact, it began to fade after a week of purchase--even with new batteries installed. Yes, I am still able to see the screen but it's just another inconvenience to have to squint.
Oh, and why is there no battery indicator? The technology is present, Sony. Use it on all of your personal audio products. I do not want to be running when the Walkman dies of a sudden.
