dangergirl's Full Review: Sony Walkman WM-EX190 Personal Cassette Player
I have owned this walkman for about 4 years now. I originally bought it because I used to have to take the bus to school, and it took me around an hour to get there, so music would help me pass the time. Also, for jogging and being at the gym, I like to listen to my own music.
The reason I bought a walkman rather than a disc-man is because 1)they are much cheaper 2)bus rides, and jogging are bumpy and the disc-man would skip a lot, 3)walkman's can take a beating that most disc-man's can not!
Good things about this product
The cost was what really made me purchase this item. At about 35 dollars CND, it was probably the cheapest one I saw, but since it is a Sony, I decided it would probably be a quality product.
The walkman is very small, and comes with a belt clip-which is removable. If you clip it onto the waist of your pants and put a shirt over top, you can barely see it- unless you like wearing really tight clothes! For the most part, it is fairly flat, unlike some of those yellow sport models which are big and bulky.
The look of the walkman is sleek and attractive. Mine doesn't look exactly like the picture, but rather is all silver.
Also, the model that I have has a bass boost, and for the price I paid, I expected the bass boost to be a lot weaker then it actually is! It is a pretty strong boost.
This walkman has a rewind button which is very useful. I have owned walkmans before that only had a fast forward button, so if you wanted to listen to a song over again, you actually had to take the tape out, flip it over, fast forward, and then take it out and flip it again, and then press play! Rewind button takes all that hassle out!
Also, I have dropped this item many times, and banged it on many things, and it still works fine- no major damage.
Some Cons about this product
When I put a tape in to listen to and press play, sometimes it tape doesn't "catch" and I have to sort of open the lid and slam it back down again to make sure it stays shut tightly. Maybe thats from all the banging?
The headphones it comes with are wimpy. I went out and bought those Panasonic Shockwave headphones that are supposed to "Shake your brain!". The sound quality is 100 times better with these headphones.
There are no features with this walkman. Other then the bass boost and the rewind button, I would have liked to see a switch that changes the direction of the tape without actually taking it out and flipping it, but as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for" right?
Battery life is excellent, but if you use the bass boost a lot, it drains the battery much more quickly. I try not to use it too often, but the sound just doesnt sound the same with out it!
Overall, this walkman is good if you don't use it too often, or if you are not picky about small things such as an equalizer, etc. Mine has lasted 4 years already! It would be good for kids.
