Arand0n's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-R500 PC Personal MiniDisc Player
Sony MZ-R500PC
Here is the "lowdown" on this device. First of all don't let the salesman tell you that these MD players produce CD quality sound. They don't, although the difference is very small. You will notice this especially when using the extended play features. LP4 is essentially useless in my opinion.
There are glitchy things when recording with this unit when using an optical cable. On some CD players (namely my Toshiba 5 disk DVD/CD player) the track markers are not recorded! So, I get one big long track containing all of the songs from the CD I am recording from. The problem was solved by using my Yamaha stereo system in place of the Toshiba.
On several attempts to record the same CD I would get complete drop outs of sound at the start of the recording(this was using analog recording). I think this problem was fixed by using optical digital recording (by the way... this unit does not come with an optical cord! I bought one for $15CAN @ Future Shop)
The volume level on the Sony MZ-R500PC doesn't go high enough in my opinion. No, I'm not deaf! When using sport style Sony headphones that rest on the ears I found that a lot of external noise interferes with what I am listening to. I don't have this problem when connecting the same headphones to my CD player.
Other things... the case the unit comes with does not have a belt clip! I bought this for exercising with... oh well.
The unit does not come with an AC power adapter! A big rip off in my book.
Finally, the headphones that the Sony MZ-R500PC comes with are really low quality, so don't expect miracles from them.
The bottom line... the Sony MZ-R500PC gives you just below CD quality sound at best in the MD format. It allows you to copy from your stereo which is cool. However, I was sold on the idea I could fit 4 CD's on to one MD. Yea, I guess I can, but the crap thrown into my ears is unacceptable.
