x182's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-R500 PC Personal MiniDisc Player
I'll start off my saying this may even be one of the greatest MD players.
I've read alot of reviews on this unit before I purchased it used over ebay because Sony stoped making it. But after hearing all about how great it is, I wanted to put it to the test. And it turns out that it is everything I heard about. It would almost be perfect if it wasn't for the little bit bigger and little bit heavier flaw.
Now by just looking at the picture people think, "it's so big" and I really hate people who say that because they really don't even know what their talking about.. I would punch someone right in their face if one more person says that again I'll...
oh...
Back to the topic. Most people are into the small MD players and recorders that are way to expensive to just listen to music. But this MD is only about 200 dollars if you can find. And it features just as good, or better, sound performance than the MZR55, R90, or even R91. Recording and tittling is a snap but I think that the recording part is just as simple as the other MDs. But once you starting tittling with the R55 or R91 you'll wish you had this one. Because this unit features a job dial which is like a wheel so you can "scroll" instead of press little tiny buttons hundreads of times. And the buttons on this is great. You can press all the buttons with your right thumb when holding it with one hand. Unlike any other unit where buttons seem so small and far from each other its a hard to change songs.
The remote is actually a pretty good feature which is popular in most MD players. But this one allows you to change songs and view song tittle, battery strength, the disc rotation. And speaking of disc rotation. I read that this unit reads from the disc for 7 seconds and then it reads the next 40 seconds from its internal memory. And I'm really not that great in math, but I think it means it's chances of skipping is 7/47, now correct me if my wrong, I think thats pretty damn good.
And last but least. The battery. This unit features a "lip-8" rechargable battery made by Sony and is tricky to find if yours runs out of a charge. Recharging takes about 3 hours. But I never had to recharge from dead battery to full battey. Secondly the battery works for about 4 hours in my book. Thirdly, if you want more battery life smack in an externl battery pack that uses double A batterys and your ready for music for hours.
Oh. And one more thing I forgot is that I droped this thing like 20 times and its still in great working condition. Doesn't look brand new, but works the day it was bought.
So overall I recommend this Md to anyone at all. Its easy to use and follow, so I think even you should buy one.
I'm selling my MZ-R50 with a recording cable, 3 opened minidisc, 3 new unopened minidisc, rechargable Sony lip-8 battery, universal battery charger, and Sony Earphones. All this can be yours for 100 American dollars, and I can be flexible on the price. Email me at x182@iam.ca if your interested. Thanks.
