| Shogungts's Full Review: Boston Acoustics PV600 Main / Stereo Speaker |
In the summer of 2001, I decided to start my first home theater system. The speakers I bought then were a pair of Boston Acoustics VR950's. They sounded (and still do) excellent. I used the VR950's w/o a sub for about 5 months. I was happy with their bass, but I wanted something more for when I was watching movies. I received some cash for X-Mas, so I decided it was time to add some more bass. I have been very happy with Boston speakers both in my car and in my home, so I was somewhat partial to them, but I listened to other manufacturers'subs as well. After listening to several different subs, I came to the conclusion that PV600 was the best by far. Well, let me rephrase that: It was the best by far for its price. And for its price, I mean it competes with subs at the $600 price level.
Onto to the sound, since that's probable what you are interested in anyway. When listening to the PV600 at the store, it sounded great, I couldn't wait to get it home and hook it up. I got home, and hooked up. It sounded good, but not great. It was certainly still worth the money, but I was wondering why it sounded so much better at the store. Then I remember that when I got my sub in my car, it took it a while before it was worn in and really sounded good. Sure enough, after about a week, the PV600 sounded incredible. It provides more than enough bass. I have the bass level (which I will talk about more later)usually set at 5 out of 10. The sub can easily be set at 8 w/o a hint of the bass getting sloppy. Even at levels 9 and 10 the bass sounds great. As I mentioned, though, I have mine set at 5. This provides plenty of base, I have to lower it to three at night and sometimes I even shut off the sub completely as not to annoy the neighbors (yes I live in an apartment). Alright, as promised, I will talk about the bass level. Boston decided to put the bass level selector on the front as a knob. This is great as it allows one to quickly and easily adjust the bass. One does not have to knell down and reach for some adjuster that is mixed in with a bunch of other things on the back of the sub.
Anybody looking for a subwoofer in the $400 to $600 dollar range should strongly consider this sub. It's the best for its price. I paid $300 for mine b/c it was opened box, so expect to pay $400-450 for it.
