Pros: VCR plus memory thing
Cons: there is no memory button, can't fast forward and rewind for a set time.
The Bottom Line: A good VCR as long as you don't care that it doesn't have a memory button.

| emandbri's Full Review: Sony SLV-N81 VHS VCR |
We had our Phillips Magnavox VCR for years but time wasn't on it's side! After years of taping tv shows (and every star trek episode) the VCR stopped recording.
I did TONS of research going to circuit city, sears, and specialty shops. I decided to spend the big bucks and get this state of the art Sony VCR, which at the time had been on the market for a month.
I bought it because of the VCR plus and the unique memory feature. The VCR actually remembers what you have taped. You hit a button and a menu pops up of the shows you have taped, you then select a show and it takes you right to it.
I was hoping this feature would make up for the fact that I couldn't find a VCR with the time search on it, like our old Phillips Magnavox had.
Well, the memory thing was really cool! We also really liked the commercial skip. But here is the problem! The VCR has no memory button! I guess Sony figured that they didn't need a memory button since it had the feature where it remembers shows.
Not having a memory button was VERY annoying for us! The reason why this was such a big deal was that we have 2 kids who watch A LOT of movies. I have the tapes all set up so that when the movie is over the tape rewinds right back to the start of the movie skipping all those annoying commercials at the beginning of each tape. Some tapes have 15 min of commercials at the beginning and having to fast forward though them all was VERY annoying!
I decided to do more research and I found that the only VCR with the time search were Phillips Magnavox. I missed this in my first research because I had already decided to spend $150 and the high end Phillips Magnavox VCRs do not have the time search. I did find cheaper ones with the time search but I couldn't find one with time search and commercial skip, which I thought was odd. I decided I could live without the commercial skip.
I sold the sony on ebay and bought an $80 Phillips Magnavox from service merchandise. I have been VERY happy with it!
