Pros: Fast Rewind, easy menu setup, worked good at first
Cons: Stopped working after about 6 months
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend this VCR to anybody. It might look good and sound good, and in the beginning may work good, but it won't last!

| amyw4236's Full Review: Sony SLV-N51 VHS VCR |
I bought this VCR about 6 months ago. It was reasonably priced for a Sony at $99, and it worked great at first. The rewind is fast, and the playback was good. The timer menu was a little annoying--could have been setup much simpler, but the rest of the menu was very easy to understand. I also noticed that the tracking needed to be adjusted quite often when watching a tape from another VCR, but I have had that happen with other VCRs too, so thats not that big of a deal.
So, it has been about six months now, and it doesn't work anymore. It started about 2 weeks ago. I tried to watch a tv show on tape, and it wouldn't play right, it was all jumpy. I went to eject it, and it wouldn't eject by the button on the VCR, it finally came out when I hit the eject on the remote. I opened up the top part of the tape, and the film was chewed by the vcr. I hoped this was a one time thing, and forgot about it. I continued to use it, and then yesterday, I put a tape with another tv show in. The show was filled with static, no matter how much I tried to adjust the tracking. I tried to take out the tape, and it wouldn't eject again. After finally getting it out, I checked it and it was the same way as the previous time. I rolled the tape back in tight and placed the tape back in the vcr. This time, the voices all sounded like chipmunks and the speed was all messed up--along with the tracking. I took the tape out (after finally getting it ejected again) and took it to another vcr. The tape played the same, the vcr had completely ruined the tape so that I couldn't even watch it any more. I refused to believe that this VCR was a goner after only 6 months, so I tried an older tape. I put it in and tried to rewind the picture just stood still. I stopped and ejected it and when I pulled the tape out, I was shocked, a long section of film was coming from the tape and was stuck in the VCR. This Sony VCR ate my tape!!
I am highly disappointed in this VCR--it didn't even last a year! I don't know what it is about VCRs lately, they make them so poorly--you have to get a new one like every 2 years. Its totally ridiculous, and this one didn't even make it past 6 months. What if that tape was a rental and the machine ate it--I would've been out a lot of money!! I gave this machine a second and a third chance, and it blew it!!
I would not recommend this VCR to anybody. It might look good and sound good, and in the beginning may work good, but it won't last! I have an RCA Hi-Fi in another room and it works great--have never had a problem, so I recommend that one, and I am going out to get another one like that. My advice is, stay away from this VCR!
