| ravynwolfe's Full Review: Olympus Camedia Brio D-150 Zoom Battery Charger |
Olympus has long been a favorite and trusted name in cameras for me. All of my cameras have been this brand, with the exception of my very first 110 as a young girl! When my husband and I were Christmas shopping, I mentioned in passing how I’d like to look into getting a digital camera sometime. He said, “Perhaps after we recover from Christmas shopping, maybe we’ll catch a sale.” On Christmas morning however, I opened up my gift, which happened to be a brand new digital camera!
First Impressions: I was a bit overwhelmed with the camera and all the cords and paperwork so I set it aside until today (12-26). I sat down ready for a long day of study and learning on this little machine, expecting to take up most of my free time trying to figure it out. I was surprised when I realized the thick little book it came with was actually written in several languages and my section was only 37 pages long (Out of 144!!) Not only was the manual shorter than I expected, but a convenient little “Quick Start” guide was also provided.
The “Quick Start” guide walked me through the battery placement and turning the camera on, as well as naming some of the features. It quickly taught the basics of shooting pictures and then viewing them on the LCD screen on the back.
After snapping a few pictures of my kids and house, I felt pretty confident of the ease of use and simple design.
What’s in the box? : Inside the box is the camera, CD-rom with manual and drivers, CR-V3 Lithium Battery pack, Strap, Video cable, USB cable, Smart Media instructions, Basic Manual/warranty/registration and various other papers pertaining to the company, Smart Media 8 MB, Static Free case, Labels for the Smart Media, Write Protect seals for the Smart Media.
I suggest you keep all paperwork and plastic bags/ties in the box and store it. You never know hen you’ll need to refer back to this information or need a safe place to store the camera!
Features : This camera is packed with tons of useful features. You can access the menu simply by pressing the well labeled menu button on the back, view it on the LCD screen and easily fly through the setup process using the arrows keys (Up, down, left and right arranged in a circle next to the LCD screen).
Your features include: One touch zoom, extreme close-up (Monitor/LCD use makes for GREAT close up shots!), Flash-Mode settings: red-eye reduction settings/Auto-flash or manual flash, Fill-in flash, Night Scene or flash on/off; instant picture preview, zoom in on pictures already taken (I love this feature!), date and time, quality selection (three settings HQ, SQ, SHQ from highest to lowest), drive mode (single shot or sequential shots!) self timer and white balance.
Each option is thoroughly explained and taught in the basic manual. I was ready to confidently shoot pictures within 15 minutes!
The 8 MB Smart Media card has plenty of room for up to 24 HQ photos. For more photos, lower the quality setting, they still look fine for websites and emails but the printed image leaves something to be desired at lower settings.
I like the size and shape of the camera, as it fits in my coat pocket without any trouble, lightweight and easy to move around, even my kids can use it! The size of the LCD screen was a cause of concern for me at first, I thought it would be too difficult to see well enough, but to my surprise, the picture came out sharp and clear with high detail. The size of the screen is no longer a concern.
Ease of Use: The camera is compact and easy to use. It has low buttons, which makes it tough to press them on accident, but high enough to press easily when needed.
The cover slides back easily and the flash pops up on it’s own. One small problem I have with this camera is the time it takes for the lens to go back into the camera when I’m ready to shut it off. You must slide the cover to your left just a few centimeters, wait for the lens to retract then slide it the rest of the way shut. Snap the flash back in place and you’re all done.
The strap is sturdy and short, but large enough to slide over the sleeve of my winter coat.
The USB cable is long enough to reach around the back of my computer and over the piles of books on my desk, to rest next to my monitor several feet away. It is painless to plug in and simple to understand. The software that comes with the camera is helpful and easy to use as well. I was able to view, edit and save my photos to my computer in just a few seconds!
The menu on the camera is set up very logically with simple icons and easy to follow prompts. If you get stuck, the answer is at your fingertips with the on-disk complete guide or the basic manual.
Overall Thoughts : I am certainly not a digital camera expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I know what I like and what’s easy to use. The Olympus D-150 is a GREAT choice for digital cameras! It has proven to be fast to learn, easy to use, and fun to play around with. Olympus has made sure to answer any questions you may have BEFORE you ask them. Help can be found in several places (The CD, the basic manual and calling the company.) but you’ll never need it! A great camera at a reasonable price, give it a shot, you won’t be sorry.
