Pros: sound quality, ability to blend with different brands of speakers
Cons: none
The Bottom Line: It's a SPECIALTY speaker, and can't do it's job any better. The speaker is WELL constructed, looks good, sounds GREAT, worthy to be in any surround sound system.
remay's Full Review: BIC America ADATTO DV52si Main / Stereo Speaker
When building my first home theater system, I had no idea what center channel speaker to purchase, until after I reviewed the Consumer Reports publication, and saw how well BIC ranked. It was quite convincing to me. So... I made the purchase online, without ever seeing and/or hearing the speaker in any local store. I could say I took a big risk doing this, as speakers can be so different sounding when comparing them in audio stores. But so far, after MANY months of use, I have been VERY pleased.
The DV52siPlus is hooked to a Yamaha HTR-5250 A/V (Audio/Video) receiver. Other speakers hooked to the receiver as part of the surround sound system are two 20 year old Phase Research front speakers, 2 Cambridge Soundworks satellite rear speakers, and a 10" Klipsch powered subwoofer.
The DV52siPlus is placed on a shelf directly above a 32" Toshiba TV. NOTE: Some speakers (and TVs) could be affected when placing a speaker this close to a TV set, but the shielding built into this speaker works just fine to prevent any interference or distortion to sound or video.
The speaker case dimensions are 6 1/2"H, 17 1/2"W, 6 1/2"D. The color is black.
Behind the removable front grill, there are two 5 1/4" (woofer) speakers mounted to the left and right of a 1/2" poly dome (tweeter) speaker, all facing the front. The power rating on the speaker is 10-125 watts and the impedance is 8 ohms.
The speaker does exactly what it is designed to do, and what the A/V receiver instructs it to do. It is great for voices, and has a frequency range that can handle most types of music, in the appropriate surround-sound mode. But... because it is a specialty speaker, do not expect it (or any center channel speaker) to match the bass output of much larger woofers found in "front" speakers. A center channel speaker is designed to COMPLEMENT the rest of the speakers in the system. So do NOT expect this speaker to replace the "main" right and left front speakers in your system.
There is SUCH a difference when using the center channel speaker and the surround-sound system for DVD, VHS, or just plain TV, instead of using the TV speakers. Voices are so much clearer, than from the regular TV speakers. It is so obvious that you can tell even when not in the same room as the system. The imaging of the voices is such that the sound appears to be coming right from the person's mouths, even though the speaker is mounted ABOVE the TV.
The center channel speaker is NOT used much for regular audio (music CDs or cassettes, or FM radio). There is no real need for it in these cases, as a center channel speaker sort of defeats the purpose in this case. For music you WANT the separation where the sound is spread out, not blended.
I have no regrets in purchasing this speaker. There have been no glitches, no distortion, no problems at all blending in with the other brands and types of speakers in our home theater system. When it is used, you hardly realize it is there, which is a real complement to a center channel speaker.
I have no doubt that the well constructed, great sounding DV52siPlus will be a valuable component to my home theater system for many years to come. It is a speaker that is worth YOUR consideration for your own surround sound system.
