| skidderss's Full Review: Alpine SPS-1729 Coaxial Car Speaker |
I purchased this set of Alpine speakers to replace my blown out/damaged (too much dance/techno does it every time) factory speakers (I've never seen such low end "factory high end" speakers) in a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
These speakers provide a clear, high quality sound. They have good low response and have virtually no distortion even at unacceptably high volume levels.
The biggest positive I have noted with this speaker over others in its size(6.5"S)/quality(mid-top end entry level speakers) line is its treble response at LOW volumes. With many speakers I've used when you turn the deck down you loose all of your high end treble and have to suffer with "midrange" everything. These speakers pull that treble out and let it shine above the other small noises.
These speakers don't get too "tweety" at high volumes either. They seem to regulate the sound well. They are CRYSTAL CLEAR for Coaxial speakers at moderate volumes.
They fit perfectly in my doors, and the LONG (I MEAN LONG ~2") included screws and hold clips hold these speakers down well. I would venture to say you would need to hold these things down, as with a amp and bass they could get "bassy".
The speakers are visually pleasing - it's a shame to cover them up with the door panels - but I don't think driving without door panels and switches is acceptable ;)
The cut out pattern ring that is on the back of the box isn't useful. I couldn't get it to line up, and didn't use the instructions on the box. I simply removed the speakers, wires (yes, these speakers come with a TON of wire), LONG screws and clips out of the box and discarded the instructions on the box. The speakers come with nice grilles, however my Grand already has the grille built into the door panels - so they were not used.
Overall I give this product a 9.5 because I really can't think of anything wrong with it especially at the price I paid. ($65 for a pair) It's not a 10 because few things in life are perfect :)
This low priced entry-level Alpine product lives up to the Alpine standard of audio excellence.
Hope this review was helpful.
System Powering this speaker is a Kenwood MP8017 MP3 In dash Deck (about a 7 out of 10 and falling every day in rating). I have supplemented this system with a 12" Rockford Fosgate XLC sub (9 out of 10) powered by a Alpine 2 channel bridged amp (9.5 out of 10).
I use this system to usually listen to: Soft Rock, Classical, Techno/Dance and House Music (usually very "acceptably" loud - I like my hearing.), News/Talk, and Audio Books (what a combo huh...).
8/4/2004 - These speakers are still installed 3 years later and still sound great - after LOTS of abuse. Good product - Apline is quality. All of the components have been flawless so far.
