| bignoyd20's Full Review: Alpine SPS-1029 Coaxial Car Speaker |
If you're like me and you look for style in everything you own on top of functionality and quality then that explains why you are reading this review.
When I set out to replace my already impressive stock audio system I wanted a speaker that I could show off instead of being hidden behind grilles. I figured that if I'm dishing out $150-$200 for a set of speakers why not opt for one that has aesthetic beauty in addition to great sound. Of course, my initial intent was simply to improve the quality of my music but decided I would pay a few extra bucks for the look.
Having said that I listened to a lot of speakers(yes, main stream stuff like sony, pioneer, etc.). As you may have guessed, you should forget about any of the main stream brands. There is absolutely no comparison. Out of all the speakers I heard these alpines had the best sound quality(quite amazing really!). There was a set of infinitys that were superb aswell, but since this is my review on Alpines I'll stay on topic.
I got home and installed these suckers and noticed that the clarity was increased a fair amount but something was lacking. I was driving the speakers off my head deck and the 40watt amp just didn't have the power of quality to keep up with these. I had an extra PPI amp sitting around so after 20 minutes or so I re-connected everything and gave it a try. There was a BIG difference. This may be a con but anyone who's serious about sound quality knows not to run the speakers straight from the cd receiver.
The bass is response is very, very tight...No replacement for a sub, but a great addition to the frequencies it can't reproduce.
When I pop from the back (where the alpines are) to the front(where the stock components are) you can't believe the difference in clarity. The stock speakers are low end infinitys in the form of a 1 inch tweeter and 4 inch mid range. And these alpines sound better!! Hard to believe but it's true.
I have no complaints about these speakers but do have a a caution, and it is that the Polypropylene cone is blue so if you do scratch, it becomes pretty easy to spot and can be an eye sore. I did this and it drove me insane until I finally caved in and replaced the speaker.
