This is my first camcorder purchase. I had been waiting for a camera that was easy to use and very affordable. This is both. Anyone could probably figure out how to operate the camera by experimenting a little, but the manual does a nice job of familiarizing you with the process and giving helpful pointers for better camera work. My favorite feature is the color viewing screen. With this you can see exactly what it is you are filming. (You can also use the eye-piece, but it is in black and white.) I normally have to wear glasses for far-off viewing, but with this camera I can film without them by using the viewing screen. The only drawback to using the screen on a regular basis is that it uses more of the battery life than the eye piece. I would recommend purchasing extra batteries for this reason.
Another thing that I like about using this camera is that it takes the small cassettes. These are easier to store, and it helps to make the camera compact. The adapter cassette (to make it work in your VCR) is a bit expensive (I paid $15), but it's worth it in the long run.
The small size of the camcorder is definitely a plus for me. I have trouble with my wrists and cannot use any equipment that is heavy or bulky. This camera is light enough for me to handle and all the controls can be accessed by finger movements.
The microphone is quite sensitive, and it will pick up a surprising amount of background sound. I like this when I am taping outdoors, since it picks up natural birdsong, etc. However, you have to be aware that unwanted noise, such as television, traffic and background conversation will also be picked up.
Zooming in and out is very easy. It makes it possible to film wildlife and pets from a distance, without disturbing their normal behaviors. For those of you who are perpetually late to events, it allows you to get the action no matter where you're sitting!
It is fairly easy to put together a smooth film sequence with this little camcorder. By using the retake feature, you can review, tape over and restart as you please. It is simple to create a seamless production with no blank spots.
I use this camera for my own personal use, as well as for creating teaching tools for my high school students. I would recommend this camera for general personal use.
