| Syntax's Full Review: Olympus Camedia D-360L Digital Camera |
I've had the camera about 9 months now, I've used it many many times, and found its features to be very nice, the pictures very clear, and the camera very easy to use seeing how it has alot of capability.
Price and Features
For the price this camera is, compared to many of the other cameras I've used and compared to the old one I had, this camera is well worth the cash.. With many features that cameras with a much higher price tag have it makes for an
appealing purchase.
As for features on the camera.. so far Ive tried all of them except Panaramic, which sadly is only available if you are using the factory 8mb memory card.. according to the book. Thats the only downside Ive seen so far. The Red Eye Reduction works great.. The Speed Shutter for sequential shooting works great.. the flash works great.. while the zoom leaves a little to be desired... it does come out a little grainy.. But thats why Optical Zoom Digital Cameras are alot more than this one..
More features on the camera include film speed settings, which help alot in darker situations, or objects that are moving or are low lit.. I havent tried taking a picture of the Moon yet using the over exposure setting, or maybe some stars.. havent had any clear weather yet.. But there is a SLOW mode Flash setting, to over expose the film.
The timer of course is standard on almost all digital cameras, works nicely.. Has a Red Light to Signal Countdown, and then flashes and beeps 3 times before the photo is taken.. The only thing that my old camera had that was handy was a swiviling eye piece... so that the LCD could be seen from the front.. which would allow setting up the camera from the oposite side when taking self photos or group photos..
Additional Memory
I bought an additional 16mb of memory for mine at a cost of 46.00 at Wal-mart after tax.. and it comes with 8mb.. so 24mb of memory should be plenty.. thats equal to about 36 high resolution images or about 200 regular quality.. So as you can tell.. memory for this camera is well within reach.. Recently I have noticed prices on smartcard memory dropping lower. I've priced it in stores as well as online, 8mb cards make good additions buy 1 every few months, and with 4 of them you should have plenty memory.
The largest photo is about 600k, a adverage large picture 1024 resolution is about 240k of memory, a 800x600 is about 200k and a 640x480 is about 125k.
Optical Vrs. Digital Zoom
This camera uses Digital Zoom, which only focuses on an item, and then increases the pixels in the selected area when the photo is snapped in order to create a larger image.. A real Optical Zoom actualy uses a lens to focus and then magnify the image. The image is then captured from the magnified lens, and no enhancements are used to create the larger than normal image. However the zoom function does work satisfactory, I dont find myself using all that often since I can get the same effect by resizing the normal image on a photo program.
Battery life
Last thing is battery life.. When your not using the flash and the LCD to take pictures.. Another nice feature.. this camera has a LCD (screen) and a ViewFinder (tradition camera lens, look through the hole) the battery lasts a very long time.. Probably in the upwards of 3 hours at least of constant running.
However if you left this camera on about an hour with the screen turned off it would deffinately drain the batteries in that period of time.
Another battery drainer is Red Eye Reduction (Strobe Flash) in combination with the LCD to take pictures. Using both these features will drain the batteries very quickly, so quickly that if you retake photos you wont be able to get more than about 20 images.
Rechargables are a must though to anyone who owns any digital camera.. Depending on the features you use, you may need 2 or more sets. I recommend 2 sets of 4 batteries. That usually lasts me when Im using my camera somewhere over a evening or day.
Overall Rating
My over all rating of this camera is high so far.. I love it.. and Im ready to go out now and put it to work. I plan on getting some nice photos out of this camera and already have. I've taken some very nice forest pictures, flower pictures using the closeup focus as well as wildflower and landscape photos which all have come out nicely.
I would deffinately recommend this camera to anyone looking to make a purchase. I bought mine and have been really satisfied with the work I have done with it, for my websites, customers, and family events.
