Pros: THX, DTS, great clean sound, ease of use, RF multiroom remote, PRICE!
Cons: Manual could be a lot better, would love to see two component outputs.
The Bottom Line: Awesome - where else can you get THX, DTS, an RF multi-room remote, component video connections, and the Kenwood name all in one package for $399?!

| ben_bethel's Full Review: Kenwood VR-510 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I've had this baby for a little while now, and all that I can say is that I wish I got rid of my Sony STR-DE915 much sooner.
The sound is very clean, and where can you get a THX certified receiver for $399 anywhere - especially something made by such a reputable manufacturer as Kenwood? One thing I really like is that while you can play with and tweak all of the settings for Dolby Digital inputs, when it comes to THX and DTS the number of options is reduced so that you're listening to movies as they were intended to be listened to - with perfect sound!
The remote is another big plus - while it could have a much larger LCD display and while the whole thing should really light up, it controls everything very well (it is a true learning remote) and it also works on radio frequency (RF) meaning that I can control the volume from the remote after I get out of the shower - with the bathroom door closed and the stereo being two rooms and 50 feet away!!!
The macros are also cool - program multiple steps to perform certain functions. Such as: turn on receiver, turn on dvd player, set volume at certain level, and go to main menu on dvd. Or: turn on receiver, turn on tv, turn on cable box, go to guide, go to current time/channel on guide, set volume at certain level. There's lots of possibilities here!
I wish that it had two component video outputs as I have both a 27" Sony VVEGA and a 120" NEC LT-150 DLP Projector... and everyone knows how much a difference component video makes when watching anything, right?!
The manual is fairly useless and creates more questions that it really answers... but there's an 800 number for people like me to call for questions.
For $399 (at mjshow.com) this is an incredible piece of equipment. If you think you need more than this, then you have some sort of inferiority complex. Save the money, buy this, and then go on a vacation somewhere.
Enjoy!
