| michaelrortiz's Full Review: Kenwood VR-510 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I thoroughly reviewed several products before making the ultimate decision to go with the VR 510. I normally would not buy anything without getting that "first-hand" experience of trying something out. I think we can all agree that Kenwood products mirror that of top of the line products in most, if not all respects. Just in case, I did however go down to the local Circuit City to try out some of their products just to make sure. I was extremely satisfied with the crisp and clear sound the Kenwood receiver output; even the low end products seemed to outshine their more "mature and expensive" models. I was sold on Kenwood; the next step would be finding a retailer with a good enough price and warranty so as to convince me to buy it. I searched several places and found that the price oddly fluctuated roughly from $700-$400; apparently there is enough there to suggest a vast cost differential--so I read up on some of the reviews submitted by people such as myself on eopinions and audioreview.com about the product--the responses were overwhelmingly in favor of the vr 510 - it seemed that everyone review I read had something positive to say about the unit -- I found it cheapest at www.etronics.com - and let me tell you. I ordered this bad-boy on 12/22 and received it 3-day mail on 12/26 - I was very pleased with the ordering time. Etronics takes pride in their merchandise and 'THEY DO' want their customers to come back as return shoppers. I must say, they were more than prompt with getting my order shipped to me; they didn't charge my credit card till my order had already shipped! Anyway, if you're looking for a good deal on virtually anything in the way of consumer electronics, stop by etronics--they won't do you wrong. And now, I am in no way affiliated with Etronics-I just figure that I got such a good deal, why not let someone else take advantage of that same opportunity?
The vr 510 is relatively easy to setup--I set mine up all with composite video and rca audio--no coaxes coming out of my stuff. If you read the manual carefully, you will bring it all together nicely; however, if you fail to do the manual thing its justice, you will fail miserably--unless you already know how to hook one of these things up to multiple components--if that's the case-then this should be easy for those. The only thing that I find a bit difficult to use is the remote control, although, after many hours of usage that night, I can honestly say that it really does work nicely. Programming is a sinch--and whoever said you couldn't do source switching with the remote is sadly mistaken--with a bit of reading on programming, you can find it's fairly easy to set.
Let me tell you gents, the sound can be summed in one word, "AWESOME." I am glad that I chose not to buy the theater in a box combo that I was originally going to go with. Here, I get THX, DOLby digital, Dolby DIGIAL II--and THX---and yes, I did say THX TWICE--it's just that, where else can you get THX at this price?! Guys, no joke, this receiver ranks up with some of the best of the "thousand dollar" receivers out there--trust me, I have heard several. The bass is phenomenal--I raced down to Best Buy and bought Pearl Harbor and Star Wars Phantom Menace on DVD and Oh GOD, this thing really screams and roaaaaaaaaaars. My living room looks really cool now with my 52' RCA and my racks. Guys, if you're looking for a good deal for the price, go with the VR 510--if you want less than mediocre sound for the same price, go with the theater in a box--Don't short-change yourself guys, get this receiver!
