| zebrex's Full Review: Kenwood VR-505 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I replaced a Denon avr 1200 with this unit because I wanted dolby 5.1. And Believe it or not this thing smokes the Denon in sound quality in digital mode (not apples to apples, I know since the Denon did not have a digital mode)Over all I was very impressed by my low buck investment I missed the on screen programming of the Denon. and I ran out of source jacks fast I have two use a Av switcher to get my Xbox in the picture. I also wish it had more Digital imputs (one coax and two optical is all it has)Its claim of 100 watts a channel seems to be a little high I have to really crank it to get to the sound leval that I could easily get out of the Denon with the same rated power. I have had it for about six months and plan on replacing it this week with a Sony ES model. IS it air ir me to compare $150 Kenwood to a $1200 Denon? No But I really cant complain about the Kenwood at that price point The stereo (two channel) sound quality wasnt bad but it could use a active xover on the mains if like me your running a powered sub. DO I recommed it? Well that depends If you are looking for an entry level AC3 reciever than sure, but if your use to higher end MID-fie units then Im going to say spend a litle more money and get the number of imputs and features that you want. It is going to make a great reciever for my second Xbox in the Spare room for the network HALO games.
For reference I am using Paradigm 7se for mains and Phantoms for surronds with a 12 inch powered sub and a Paradigm center
