| chrisb76's Full Review: Pioneer VSX-D810S 6.1 Channels Receiver |
I've been through a number of surround sound minishelf systems, and I was looking for a good receiver for a good price. I did some research and narrowed my choices down to this and the Kenwood 509 (both list for around $400). Both have component video ins and outs, and both have a number of optical ins and outs (I noticed that a number of higher priced receivers don't have component ins and outs or 6.1). The two are identical except the Kenwood has Dolby Pro Logic 2 and the Pioneer 850 doesn't, but the Pioneer has DTS ES (6.1 surround) and the Kenwood doesn't. The Kenwood also has an LCD remote, which probably added to the cost of its predecessor (the 507 which doesn't have the component video). I figured that while 6.1 is limited to a few DVDs now, it would probably be the next step in decoding in the future. So I might as well spend the money now and not have to upgrade for a while. When I found this system at Circuit City for $299, I jumped right on it. Besides, a few of my friends had older Pioneer receivers and had never had any problems with them, so I was confident in Pioneer receivers and products. After buying this receiver, I have to say I'm very impressed and pleased. I never knew what I was missing until I watched my DVDs with this receiver. The sound is incredible.
The only complaint would be the instructions are not as indepth as they could be. But I think careful reading will get you through all the options. The remote is slightly confusing too, it took me a while to program it to work with my TV, and then it took me a while to figure out what buttons did what (took me ten minutes to find the buttons to change the channel on my TV). But at least you can program the buttons individually in case the preprogrammed functions don't do what you want. Anyway, I think this system is impressive for the price. It's the cheapest 6.1 receiver that I could find, and it won't disappoint.
