Pros: Excellent bass up to a point, and sharper highs than your average speaker.
Cons: Where's the crossover???
The Bottom Line: Would be 5 star quality if the crossover was 3-way.

| proaudio's Full Review: Yamaha NS-A100X Main / Stereo Speaker |
To put it in short, I am really disappointed with Yamaha this time.
I purchased this speaker in Best Buy, and made the mistake of not 'cranking' them right there in the store. I never listened to them in detail. Once hooked up, and assembled, I put in the Apollo 13 soundtrack, and listened to the rumbling of the bass drum, and the mids and highs of the orchestra. I put in a variety of music types, and quickly found that the mid-range driver was a bit confused. Go ahead. Go to Yamaha's specifications page for these speakers. (http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/Specs/?gSPK00010NS-A100XT) You'll find that the crossover frequencies are not listed. (a crossover is a electronic device that basically sends frequencies to the corresponding speakers (i.e. lowest frequencies to the woofers) ) I found that the mid-range driver was 'moving' much more than the woofers. This means that there is a crossover, but it is only 2-way; sending highs to the tweeter and lows to both the woofers AND the mid-range. So what's the problem? If you play low frequencies on these speakers, such as thunder on a DVD movie, the 4 1/4" mid-range will try to produce these sounds, and as a result, the driver 'farts'. If you are really pushing the speakers, the mid-range could even 'blow'.
On the bright side, the dual 8's are excellent and produce bass effortlessly. But if you plan to appreciate the low end of the spectrum, the 'mid-range' is going to hold you back. The highs are comparable to that of JBL's titanium tweeters. Sharp and clear, the typical music/movie enthusiast will enjoy this speaker.
