Pros: Price; Decent Sound
Cons: Non-removable grille; center lacks a little punch.
The Bottom Line: A great entry level set of surround and center speakers. Along with good main speakers and a subwoofer, the NS-P60 will not disappoint, especially at its price.

| ingadog's Full Review: Yamaha NS-P60 Speaker System |
I bought the NS-P60 as an afterthought, primarily because it was on sale, when I got a new AV receiver (Also a Yamaha, but that is another story). I was building a new system but I was not prepared to buy speakers yet. But after I auditioned them, they sounded very good. Matched to their much more expensive Atlantic Technologies and B&W counterparts, they were naturally some rungs lower, but for less than a third of the price....Well... you know what speakers are now sitting in my listening room.
Tech: The impedance of the speakers are 6 ohm and their sensitivity rated at 91 db/2.83v/1 m (surrounds at 90db). The center is said to yield a frequency response of 70hz
to 30000hz while the surrounds at 80hz to 30000 hz. No statement is made on the brochure if these ratings refer to -3 db or other measurements. Hence, I wouldn't really rely on these numbers.
Looks: The speakers I got were black, covered in black grille cloth. One thing that I did not particularly like was that the speaker grilles are apparently non-removable.
This means you can't show off the cones to your friends. Overall, the speakers were quite staid and unobtrusive, which is good really for home theater applications.
Build: The enclosures appear to be solidly built. They are actually quite heavy. However, they only sport one pair of heavy duty binding posts. So you cant bi-wire them.
Another thing: the center was provided with velcro stickers so you can stick them on top of your tv. The annoying thing is that the adhesive on the velcro strips was quite soddy, and they didn't stick at all to my set.
Sound: The speakers sound very respectable. They can really shine on good programming such as Saving Private Ryan. The bullets whizzing by were quite realistic, as well as the raindrops slowly enveloping the scene. Dialogue was rendered with good clarity and refinement. But the center lacked a little more punch, though good main speakers, preferably floor standing, would cover this up well, along with a good subwoofer.
Overall, the sound will not disappoint. Not the greatest I heard, but at this price range, I'm actually considering buying another set for my parents' system.
