KMINER's Full Review: 6 Month Frontline Plus for Dogs 45 88lb
Our two miniature pinchers get so much attention in the house, people can forget we have another dog - the family dog. Abby was purchased from the local ASPCA about 10 years ago. She is a medium sized terrier mix, a a golden tan in color. She is a sweet dog who loves the children and the outdoors.
The problem is that, especially here in the South (we live on the Virginia/North Carolina border), it seems that ticks make it their life's work to try and get into our house. I swear they have entire encampments set up in our spacious, grassy yard. Even with hiring a lawn service to regularly cut the grass, we quickly noticed that the dogs were all getting ticks. When we asked the Vet what to purchase for help with this, Frontline was recommended. In particular we purchased the 6 Month Frontline Plus for Dogs 45 to 88lbs for Abby.
This product is designed with fleas and ticks in mind. We haven't particularly notice a huge problem with fleas - or maybe it's just that this product is really successful in this area. All in all the stuff is pretty easy to use. This "purple" package is noted to be appropriate sized dog that Abby is, and with having other dogs that way considerably less I appreciate that Frontline makes distinctions between their variations. The product is applied once a month, so the purchase of this supply lasts 6 months. It costs us around $70.00 for the package.
Inside are small capsules that you have to snip off the top to. Each capsules requires the entire portion of the liquid to be used, so you use up everything inside in one dose. To apply you simply part the dog's hair in order to get to a good patch of the dog's skin, and then you squirt this stuff directly on. Our dog is really sweet and cooperative and this is never a problem to do. It only requires one person to apply.
I felt it was important to include the company's exact wording on this product, since it is a medication for your pet, and it's best to be as well informed as possible:
"Frontline Plus contains fipronil, a flea adulticide. Fipronil works by affecting the parasite's (the flea's or tick's) nervous system causing paralysis and death of the parasite. Fipronil spreads over the pet's body with the body oils killing 98-100 percent of the fleas or ticks within 24-48 hours, and controlling transmission of tick-borne disease, such as Lyme disease.
Fipronil collects in the oils of the skin and hair follicles and then is released over time (up to 1 month) from the hair follicles onto the skin and hair.
Frontline Plus kills adult fleas just like Frontline, and contains an ingredient called methoprene, that kills flea eggs and larvae, to keep all stages of fleas from developing and bothering your pets and your family. Methoprene mimics the juvenile growth hormone of fleas, keeping the larvae from molting and developing into more mature forms. Frontline Plus delivers total, effective flea prevention to your pet.
Frontline Plus stays on even with bathing, swimming, or exposure to sunlight."
In terms of flea protection I don't think we've ever found a flea on any of the dogs, Abby or the others, since using Frontline Plus. They don't seem to itch or scratch the way I've seen many friend's and family's dogs do. Abby does not seem irritated or her skin bothered by applying this product.
My small concern is whether or not this product could be doing more in the tick area. Again, ticks seem to have taken up a happy home in my yard. Once the season starts and we apply the treatment, we never see another tick on the dogs. The problem is, somehow the ticks are still finding their ways into our home - because we are finding them on the people! My concern is that maybe the dogs are carrying the ticks into the house, and since the dogs are protected, the ticks are then crawling onto us. Because I seem to find ticks weekly on my children! Since ticks carry a disease, and in particular since one of my children was already treated last summer from a tick bite in relation to this disease, the idea that there could be "something better out there" still sort of stays with me. But I really cannot see anything working better than something so well known as Frontline Plus, so maybe it's just the nervous parent in me.
Overall we have been very pleased with our purchase of 6 Month Frontline Plus for Dogs 45 to 88lbs for our dog. The product was highly recommended from our Vet, it's easy to use and apply, and overall fairly effective.
