Being someone that has loved Lego Castle themes for years I have to admit that the newer sets don’t have the same charm and replay value. Long gone are the cool knights, multi leveled castles and tournament covers for horses; now you get something that is either too simple in design or something that makes you want to throw a partial build at the wall. There seems to be no middle ground for the newer castle themed set and that is a true shame. If you are in to Lego and like to build your own scenes then pieces like this are an essential. They provide a lot of support if you are going to build two or three levels and reduce the overall weight of the structure so moving it doesn’t have to involve five people and a huge piece of plywood to support it.
Lego experimented with these types of panel pieces; some rare sets had stickers that you could apply to them but most of them came with a stenciled design on them. This is one of the nicer stenciled panels that could be used for a wall section but these are not corner / tri-cut pieces. If you have two of them you can use them to create a corner but they are not angled. They snap in with stud sections at the top and open pods at the bottom and even though they have a lot of detail to them I always felt that the windows were a little too small for the size of the panel. Of course I was reprimanded for saying this on a Lego message board because these windows were supposed to be small in size to allow archers to have cover when defending the castle. Whatever dude, they still look small to me.
Where can you get them? There are brick vendors and resellers that specialize in individual pieces like this. You do have to ask what the condition is on them before you buy them so you can do the math and see if they are worth the price. Most resellers will be selling new, never played with pieces but there are some that will sell used pieces that are in good or higher condition. This exact piece has only been in four Lego sets; the chances of them bringing this pattern back is slim. The last time it was featured in a Castle themed set was in the 2006 reissue of the King's Castle but the other three sets are all from the 90's. There are other castle panel pieces with the ten stone pattern around the window but they lack the side column pieces.
The sets that these came in are:
King's Castle – 10176 - 899 Pieces - $99.99 – 2006
If you want a one-stop shopping experience to get these panels, this set has the most of all of them but at a hundred dollars or more you might be better off buying them for a couple dollars a piece
Royal Knight Castle – 6090 – 746 Pieces - $79.99 - 1995
A great looking castle but if you are only buying it to get the panels you are going to feel extremely ripped off. This is a hard to find set but worth it if you are in to the Lego Castles
Dacta Fright Knight Castle Set – 9376 - 320 Pieces - $49.99 – 1997
One of the nicer Dacta themed castles but hard to find. While it makes for an impressive addition to any medieval scene the price on this has tripled since its release
Skeleton Surprise – 6036 – 74 Pieces - $9.99 - 1995
This is the least expensive set that contains this exact brick panel piece but there is only one in the set. Good luck finding it for ten dollars
The obvious downside to these pieces is that the stenciled sections can get scratched or marred if they aren't stored properly when you aren't using them. I prefer to snap them together and store them in a plastic case so they aren't sliding against each other but everyone has their own way of keeping these from getting trashed. The ultimate horror is seeing someone selling old Lego Castle themed sets and all of the elements are thrown into a plastic tote or cardboard box. It's a Lego lover's version of seeing someone handling rare coins with their bare hands or someone licking their finger and then turning the page of a first edition book that's long since been out of print.
If you are like me and want to keep expanding your castle, pieces like this allow you to do so without ripping the whole thing apart at the base. These do work well with all of the standard sized Lego Castle sets in regard to scale and color; the black isn't glossy but it isn't flat so it looks good without taking away from the rest of the build. The average resale price on these are about two dollars a piece but there are sellers that are willing to give you a sweet price break if you order them in bulk. Online auctions can also be a good place to find them but you are taking a risk in ordering them without being able to see a photo of each and every piece.
