Pros:Keeps soil loose and moistened.
Cons:puffy peat clouds
The Bottom Line: Schultz Peat Moss helps my seedlings establish a good root system, resulting in a stronger, healthier plant.
In my trial and error methods of growing plants from seeds, I scour stores and garden centers to find the best and easiest way to get the results I want. While on a search to find a soil that would help my seedlings survive their first transplant to a bigger pot or their permanent home in my yard, I found Schultz Peat Moss.
Peat Moss
This little jewel of a soil amendment sold me when I read that it encourages strong root development by preventing soil compaction. My seedlings were only a few inches tall with a fragile root system. I wanted them to be able to establish stronger roots with ease. The package, also, states natural, organic soil conditioner that helps retain moisture and nutrients. Retain moisture? That's good...I am known for my forgetfulness. I prefer to think of it as single-mindedness. I get on a task and want to see it finished...which means if my task at the time is not taking care of my plants...I may forget to water them a time or two.
How I Use Schultz Peat Moss
Peat moss is a soil amendment. That means you don't use it alone. When making up new pots I use a mixture of 3/4 potting soil and 1/4 peat moss. This combination makes a light soil with a bit of form to it, that works well for me. I do thoroughly wet the mixture, leaving it for 24 hours to allow the peat moss to dampen.
When transplanting to my yard I remove the soil from the area I'm planting in, placing it in a bucket. I stir in peat moss, wetten the mixture and allow it to stand while I prepare the plant in the hole I've dug. I then replace the amended soil in the hole around the plant. I do leave a drip hose on the area for 3 to 4 hours to make sure there is plenty of moisture in the ground.
Does It Work?
In a word? Yes.
In more words? I've planted seedlings in plain potting soil and with the peat moss mixture. The seedlings grow faster and larger in the mixture. I believe that is due to them not having to struggle as hard to get their roots established. The amended soil is lighter and less compact.
Problems? There's only one thing I don't care for, but it's not a big problem. The peat moss in the Schultz bag is dry and crumbles easily. When getting some out I get little puff clouds of moss everywhere.
I recommend Schultz Peat Moss for anyone that is growing their own plants. The seedlings have an easier time getting their roots to grow, which results in stronger, healthier plants. I won't use any other type of peat moss to amend my soil, when I get such great results with Schultz.
I paid $3.99 for an 8 quart bag at a local store.
