Winchester 9mm Luger 147 Gr HP

This is a product of Winchester's line of handgun ammunition that is sold under the Super X label with a large Winchester logo on the box for good measure. The Super X brand features Winchester high quality with proven effective loads for the stated application.

The Super X line of ammunition is made on the same machinery as all Winchester ammunition with high quality components and tight quality control but uses the best quality bullets to make sure the performance is up to their high standards.

Winchester also makes USA brand for target loads for economical practice, thus it, is only available in calibers that are extremely popular and big sellers like 9mm Luger, 45 ACP, 40 S&W, 38 Super, 38 Special, 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, and other similar popular calibers. You can tell the brand by the White Box, and that's what most shooters call it - Winchester White Box. The ammunition in White Box typically has full metal jacketed (FMJ) bullets, meaning the noses are covered all the way to the base with solid copper jackets. This feature helps with feeding and penetration and is used a lot in autoloaders or in ammunition that is designed to pierce metal.

For hunting or service ammunition we have Super X with bullets designed for terminal performance. These cartridges are found with jacketed soft point (JSP) or jacketed hollow point (JHP) bullets as seen here for excellent performance at a popular price. These bullets have the soft lead noses with hollow points exposed and are designed to expand in flesh at handgun velocities, yet they are jacketed to prevent leading the barrel.

The Super X 9mm Luger ammunition comes in boxes of 50 rounds.  The cartridges come in a plastic tray with a single layer of 50 cartridges, 5x10.

The standard bullet weight for 9mm is 115 grain bullets and most autoloaders are set up for standard weight ammunition with the sights calibrated for that magic weight.  These are loaded with 147 grain bullets that were introduced in recent years after worries were expressed about "over penetration," ie, shooting a perp and having the bullet continue on and penetrate another person.  This hubbub is almost never seen in practice but you give people enough free time and they will find something to worry about.  The key idea is having shooters be well enough trained that they hit what they are aiming at instead of blazing away indiscriminately but lots of them do, alas.

Winchester makes great ammo and I have used it in my SIG P226, my Colt Combat Commander, and my Glock 19, which is the most fun to shoot.

The 147 grain bullet impacts about 3 inches lower in the target than standard 115 grain bullets on the 50 foot range.  This is close enough to use the same sight settings for either load and I do so. The effect of this if I am shooting at a beverage can, I simply aim at the top and hit it dead center with the 147 grain while the standard 115 grain is aimed at the bottom of the can and hits dead center. Either one works fine.

When shooting, always wear ear protection and obey the four rules -

Four Rules of Shooting Safety
