Acco Small Binder Clips – Help keep it in order!

Written: Apr 30 '08
Pros:Strong grip, rust resistant and very easy to use and inexpensive!
Cons:Can be bent if stepped on or banged around a lot!
The Bottom Line: Very durable clips, holds items well and they last!

ACCO brand binder clips seem to be the main stay in the office where I work. I normally don’t have a super thick batch of papers to put together, but I know that I have small to medium sized groups. Therefore, I don’t need the super clips that are 1 ¼ inches long and ½ inch wide. I am happy with the ¾ inch long and only 5/16 of an inch wide (that is the capacity, how much it will hold).

The Product

These clips are like most binder clips. They are black clips with a tremendous amount of clamping power. You don’t want to put your finger inside these clips as it will pinch down tremendously tight to hold whatever is in it.

The clip has 2 handles that swing out, opposite of the triangular shaped clip and the handles lay flat. When you swing the handles back over the clamp part of the clip, it forms the means for you to pry open the clip portion allowing you to slide in the papers or whatever you want to hold.

I have used these clips to put items on my wall at work. I clip the group of documents together that I need, clamp the clip down on the top left edge and put a stick pin or tack on the wall. The handles have an oval shaped ending to them so they help hold things nicely on the wall. The handles are not open ended! The handles on the clip, as mentioned, move back over the clip to open and close the clip and also move extended out from the clip and lay flat against the items that you have clipped inside. They lay flat against these items so they will not stick out. This makes hanging items with them or storing items in desk drawers or file folders easy!

The clips afford me the luxury of not having to staple the papers. I don’t mind stapling, but if you get a big group of papers together, it can be a pain! Or, if you know that items will change around a lot and you will need to pull some sections out and replace them, stapling is a hassle. These clips are terrific! I like to put the sleeve protectors over items that I use frequently and hang them all up on my wall together. This way, when I am using the clips it is easy to take the items down, switch out the pages that I need to and it is super quick to change!

I am not sure if you are familiar with Avon Catalogs or not. But, these catalogs are not huge, but they are thick little catalogs with the current sales promotions. I usually get one of these from a co-worker every few weeks. I will use a clip to hang this up on my work cube and people that want to stop by to check out what’s on sale can! This little clip holds this without a problem and it is a 160 page (thin paper) catalog! That seems to be stretching the clip to it’s maximum though. If you go many more pages, or if they started printing this magazine with thicker paper, it would not work and I would have to move up to a bigger clip!

These clips are reportedly rust-resistant. But, be sure to watch which ones you purchase as there are some clips that are plastic and some that are all made of metal. The only way that I can see to figure out which you have is to open the box, as there is nothing on the outside that indicates the clips are metal or plastic. You can jingle them around in the box and the sound like metal, but the handles are metal on the clips that I have seen that were plastic too! So, if you want to be certain, check the box inside to verify. If you are ordering online, read the description and hopefully they will indicate which style you are purchasing!

These clips normally come in boxes of 12 clips and are relatively cheap, running anywhere from around .40 to .70 depending on where you buy them! Watch for the best price! One final thought, if you really need to (I don’t know why you would though), you can take the handles out. You have to put the handles up over the clip and then try to pinch the sides of one of the handles together. When you are pinching the handle together, you will need to slide the part of the handle out of the circular hole that they are held in place with! Be sure to keep the handles in a safe spot. Since they are so small, they can be easily lost and then it will be a bit more difficult to open the clip up when you want to remove the items that you are holding with the clip!
Overall Impressions

This brand of binder clips works terrific. These clips have a very strong hold on the items that you put in them and the clips last! I don’t know of a time that I have ever had to replace a clip whether at home or here at work. They seem indestructible. I am sure that the can get bent up easily if stepped on, misused, or used to hold things together and they get banged around a lot. But, for my normal office needs and home needs, I purchased some and I have not had to replace any.

I have had to purchase more of these clips though for home use, as I used them for my paperwork and now have more items that I need to clip and am out of the clips! (Either that or I need to go through my paperwork and shred older stuff to free up more clips! That’s more likely the case!)

These clips are very inexpensive and they hold well! If you want an alternative to stapling, these should be the clips that you look for as they are great clips!

~Thanks for spending time with me today!~
