Our office has quite a few Acco Swingline Brands Staple Removers. I can’t imagine this office running at full efficiency without one of these little marvels.


Description

This device is about 2 1/4” long x just over 1 1/2” wide. It stands 1 1/2” high. Imagine the jaw of a saber tooth tiger. This staple remover acts like a jaw with the two large “teeth” on both top and bottom. The jaw part is constructed from metal. On the top and bottom of the jaw are two smooth T-shaped pieces of dark plastic where the fingers rest to press the two jaw sections together. The plastic is a deep cocoa brown color that could be mistaken for black. The Swingline name is engraved into the metal along one side.


My Experiences

As a rule, I’m happy with Swingline products. Not everything they make is wonderful. However, this Staple Remover is a winner. Out of all the Staple Removers in the office, none of these Swingline removers has broken or malfunctioned.

In case you are unfamiliar with this type of product, this is an easy to use device. Grab the paper with the staple that needs removing. Holding the Staple Remover, position the “teeth” on either side of the staple. Pinch the “jaws” of this remover together so that the “teeth” grab the staple. Pull upward so that the “teeth” yank the staple from the paper. The pulled staples will most often gather along the teeth and are easy to remove.

The thicker the stack of papers, the harder it will be to pull the staple free. Sometimes the staple will break when removing it. In those situations, I find it best to put the Staple Remover down and fan the papers away from the broken staple. Often the Staple Remover will not grab the fractured staple, and I have to wiggle the broken staple out of the stack. That’s when fingernails come in handy!

These are small devices, which makes them easy to store in a drawer or office supply organizer. I can also grab one off my desk and carry it with me into the conference room when I am stapling and organizing presentation materials.

Anyone can use this Staple Remover as long as they have mobility in their hands. Those with arthritis may have a more difficult time pinching the Staple Remover shut and then pulling the staple free from the paper. However, the wide T-shaped plastic pieces offer plenty of room for the fingers and thumb to rest while using the product.

These Staple Removers are durable. The only signs of wear are the scratches along the metal pieces where staples have marred the metal. I don’t think a Staple Remover in this style is meant for comfort or long-term use.


Purchasing

These Swingline Staple Removers sell for just over $1.00. They are very economical. There is a more deluxe version of this product that has a textured grip, but it sells for around $3.00.


Summary

I am very pleased with the Acco Swingline Brands Staple Removers. This product is easy to use and requires little maintenance. Just remove the pulled staples from the “teeth”. This Staple Remover does the job, sparing my fingernails.
