Prepoia's Full Review: ACCO Brands Swingline 79190 Desk Stapler Stapler;S...
Okay. I admit that a classroom is not the place to review the longevity of a stapler. The bottom line is that staplers dont last in a middle school. My 7th and 8th grade classes have gone through five very good staplers in the past school year. I, personally, have the same stapler at home that Ive had for at least 10 years; but in a school situation nothing much lasts. By this age, kids realize that staplers do more than staple papers. Staples are fun to shoot at other unsuspecting classmates. Students this age also still have motor control issues. They hit them hard or they jam them in unfathomable ways. They also like being in charge of unjamming staplers but they dont always succeed when they use paper clips and scissors as tools to work on jammed staplers.
I will be reviewing one stapler that lasted the longest because it was unique in design and because of that, the kids werent able to use it as a weapon; but they also could never get it to work right because it needed a light touch in only one spot to make it work.
Four weeks ago I decided that I would not replace the last broken stapler. That was unrealistic because classrooms need staplers for stapling papers at least a few times a day. The alternative paper clip or tear and make a corner attachment style was too cumbersome and many of the kids just turned in their papers unattached. This created a multiple of problems for me. I often couldnt find the second or third sheets of assignments and spent way too much time matching up papers (many without names) to their one assignment.
So, of course, I broke down and purchased another stapler. I didnt have much choice since I got this one at a drugstore (instead of an office supply store) and I didnt want to spend too much money on it. The one I purchased looked user friendly; cost $7.99; and met the paper needs I have.
The stapler comes in many pretty colors like blue, purple, and hot pink. I decided on the blue one. The Swingline staplers that Ive owned in the past have done the job and I hoped this one would. Theres only about 4 weeks left of school and I decided to keep this one under teacher control at all times.
The stapler is hand sized. It staples quickly and quietly from two to twenty sheets of paper. It takes standard sized staples. The stapler doesnt come with beginning staples so I had to purchase those as well. The outside is a hard plastic in a curved style that fits nicely into your hand. It is good for right or left-handed people. The packaging states that the stapler has a soft feel grip for hand held comfort, and thats true. It states that it has an all metal stapling mechanism for durability and that will be tested longer before I make a decision about that claim.
It has an upright design for easy access. This means that you can set it standing in an upright position and easily grab it and be ready to use it at will. While that claim is true; my desk prohibits standing it upright because Im always knocking it over. If I had a cleaned off desk top, Im sure you could sit it upright for longer periods of time than 2 seconds and that it would take up less space that way.
But, I keep my stapler in front of me at all times; laying on its side so it doesnt remind the kids of the fun they are missing; and then I hand it over to a student to use only when Im there to witness the stapling process and can then get ownership right back.
So, hows it working? Its working great so far. The kids like how easy it is to use (and so do I because I staple often each day as well). Its about a month old and is still functioning at full capacity and hasnt yet jammed. The jamming happened even when I was watching with a few other staplers Ive had so I have to give an A+ to this one.
In other words, this is a great stapler for the price. Id definitely recommend it.
