| qwazi's Full Review: AKG K 1000 Professional Headphones |
I have owned and used these headphones daily for 7 years now, I bought them used which adds an additional 2 years of usage. I have never really taken care of my headphones, I've had them laying around on my desk, the cable has been laying on the floor (and I've even put my chair on the cable a few times). They still work...
After all these years of bad treatment the only two problems I have had is:
1. I managed to get a feather from a pillow stuck inside the metal wiring which caused a scratching noise when I was playing music, I opened them up and removed the feather and all was ok.
2. The cable just recently started to show signs of being worn out... The exterior rubber cable leading up to the headphones is torn off at one place, the actual cable inside is still intact though. However, after 7 years of my treatment it is strange that these cables lasted this long.
I wouldn't recommend people with long hair to buy these headphones. At a certain hair length the hair manages to seek its way through the metal wires so it touches the membrane. The sound caused by hair against a vibrating membrane is quite hearable and quite annoying. Ofcourse you can make sure to brush your hair backwards when listening but after several hours of listening hair tends to find its way back to its original position.
Using the speaker output on your amplifier to drive these headphones has both pros and cons.
Pro: well, they aren't driven on bad quality 3.5 mm or 5 mm stereo plug headphone connectors...
Cons: you need a good amplifier if you wish to enjoy the full capabilities of the headphones.
Sound equipment: Been running the headphones on several systems but two in particular:
1. Arcam Alpha 10 Amplifier with Arcam Alpha 8SE CD-player. Tara Labs Prism 55 signal cable
2. Rotel RA-930AX amplifier with Rotel RCD-930AX CD-player, Linn signal cables
I wouldn't recommend running the headphones on a weaker amplifier than the Rotel RA-930AX, atleast not if you like loud music. The headphones themselves can handle louder music than your ears ever will, however I have found the sound to become irritable at a lower volume on weaker amplifiers.
Sound:
You would have a hard time finding headphones with better bass than the AKG-K1000 headphones. There are alot of resources, even in high volumes (managed to get my ears vibrating by the soundwaves). The fact that you can adjust the angle of the speakers to fit your ears allows for a more natural sound. However, although the AKG-K1000 headphones sound more like listening to speakers than any other headphones I've listened too, don't expect the same feeling. They are still headphones and they sound like headphones.
The midrange feels very exact but not as soft as with Electrostat headphones (like Stax). The upper midrange can become "strong" at times. The tweeter is also very detailed but it doesn't get soft (so if you like softer sound you would probably be better off with some Electrostat headphones).
