AKG Perception 200 Studio Condenser Mic: Expensive Studio Sound Just Got Affordable

Written: Mar 12 '08 (Updated Mar 13 '08)
Pros:1) Rugged construction; 2) Warm, rich, yet transparent sound; 3) Unrivaled Price/Performance
Cons:Guilt. At this price, you'll think you robbed someone.
The Bottom Line: My Recommendation? Snag one for yourself, before AKG comes to their senses and triples the price.

For over six decades, sound engineers the world over have relied on AKG as the
pre-eminent standard for studio recording. The reason is simple: AKG delivers.

The Perception 200 is nothing short of ground-breaking. Die-cast metal housing.
Nickel-plated grills. Gold connectors. Strikingly beautiful, with the unparalleled
sonic quality pros have come to expect from AKG, all at a price that leaves the
competition scrambling for answers.

The AKG Perception 200 is a large-diaphragm studio condenser mic with a true
20Hz - 20kHz frequency response, a switchable bass cut filter to reduce proximity
effect, and a switchable -10dB pre-attenuation pad for use in high sound pressure
level environments up to 145dB.

When you feel the weight of this mic in your hand, AKG's reputation for superior
build-quality becomes readily apparent. By comparison, my AT2020 (Review Here)
a great mic in its own right, felt a bit like a lightweight. Even the included "spider"
shock-mount is well constructed, better than many third party mounts costing
$40-$50, and quite capable of eliminating extraneous vibration. And if that weren't
enough, AKG has surrounded its work of art with a tank of a metal carrying case,
all protected by a two-year parts & labor warranty.

So how does it sound?

The Perception 200 delivers an ultra-clean signal, low noise profile, and a clarity
of sonic reproduction comparable to studio condensers costing three-to-five-times
as much. Vocals are crisp, but not brittle; warm, but not muddied. In addition to
a remarkable sensitivity, sound is very precise, with an open presence at the top.
Pair this mic with a decent tube preamp, and you'll be treated to a range of sonic
possibilities that rival the very best studio condensers.

The AKG Perception 200 won't be the only mic you ever need, but it just may be
the only mic you can't be without. You simply cannot get more for anywhere near
its price. But I promise you can pay a lot more...
and get a lot less.
