AMF Bowling Pinbusters for the Nintendo Wii is a bowling game featuring three game modes, eight wacky characters, and seven venues. Yet, does it expand upon Wii Sports Bowling?
AMF Bowling Pinbusters features a Bowl Now mode, a Tournament mode, and two mini-games (Pool Bowl and Obstacles). In the Bowl Now mode, you can play with up to 4 human players, and can play with up to 3 computer players too. In Tournament mode, 8 players (up to 4 human players and then the remaining positions are filled with computer players) compete to be the champion. The tournaments are single elimination based and consist of three rounds. Each round pairs two players, and the winner of the round advances to the next round. In the Pool Bowl mini-game, you play a game of pool on the lanes. Near the bowling pins, there is an eight-ball; you must hit this eight-ball into the bowling pins. If you try to hit the bowling pins with your bowling ball in this mode, they won’t count. In the Obstacles mini-game, AMF boxes are placed on the lane, if your bowling ball hits a box, it will bounce off and most of the time, it will go into the gutter. Sometimes the bowling ball will bounce off into the gutter and then bounce back out into the pins. So, at times, hitting one of these boxes doesn’t necessary mean you’ll get a gutter. I think this is probably just a glitch in the game, but maybe it’s supposed to do that.
AMF Bowling Pinbusters has eight wacky characters each with their own attitude and style. There’s Sally, a friendly cow girl; Sarge, the military perfectionist; Lenny, the Elvis look-alike, Johnny, who looks more like a footballer than a bowler; Carmen, the fashion bowler; Big Money, the bowling rapper; Roxy, the teenage bully; and Cody, the surfer who shreds more bowling pins than waves. Like I said before, these characters are wacky! Each character has some voice, but they tend to repeat phrases rather quickly. Here’s an example, if you a get a strike with Sally, she’ll say something like “Them pins are stampeding!” or Sarge when he misses, “I’m going to discipline those pins!”. Cool at first, but they get old pretty quick. The voices are done well and they add some life to the characters. The characters all bowl the same, so there’s really no “Best Character” to choose. AMF Bowling Pinbusters features seven bowling venues. There’s Malaysia, Sports Bar, Wild West, Hollywood, Brentwood Manor, Detroit, and Vegas. Each venue is basically the same thing expect each venue features its own set of colors, lights and music.
The music featured in AMF Bowling Pinbusters is acceptable. It has a nice variety of techno, soft rock, piano, and classical. It’s enjoyable while bowling and won’t get on your nerves. The sound effects sound just like the real bowling experience and it pulls the player into the action. The graphics are also acceptable for the most part. The bowling pins, bowling balls, and the bowling venues are smooth and they look good in my opinion. The character models don’t feature much detail, but I believe if they did, they would lose their wackiness and overall appeal. The pin action in AMF Bowling Pinbusters is very good and the pins slide and fall fairly realistic. The bowling pins provide a good challenge in scoring strikes and spares, and its not like their feathers or rocks at times. The controls of AMF Bowling Pinbusters are very good. You raise the Wii-mote to your chest, hold down the B button, and then swing back then forward, just like your really bowling, and then release the B button at the end of your swing. During the swing, you can put spin on the ball by twisting the Wii-mote.
I do have one major negative of AMF Bowling Pinbusters. The game doesn’t save! The game has no high-scores and features no unlockables at all, but you would think that the game would at least save your options. Oh well. Overall, AMF Bowling Pinbusters is your standard, acceptable bowling game. I enjoyed the game and would recommend renting, but don’t buy! If you’re tired of Wii Sports Bowling and want some new bowling action, give AMF Bowling Pinbusters a shot as a rental.
